Freely Given1 Corinthians 4:7

What Did You Bring In With You

This message is for the man who came to faith late and believes the people who grew up in it were handed something at the start that he arrived too late to be given

He sits four rows from the back on the left, and he has sat there for two years and three months, which he could tell you to the week.

He came in at fifty two. Not out of a crisis, which is what people assume, but out of a slow Tuesday and a conversation with a man at work that would not leave him alone. He was baptized in the October. He has read the whole of the New Testament twice and he keeps a list of words he has looked up.

And every Sunday, roughly twice, somebody at the front says a thing like: well, we all know the story of Gideon. And the room does the small warm laugh of people who know. And he sits there and writes Gideon in his phone.

That is all. That is the whole wound. Nobody has been unkind to him in two years and three months. They put a hand on his shoulder and they are glad he is there and one of the men rings him on a Thursday. And still, every single week, he sits in that seat with the same quiet arithmetic running: they were given something when they were seven. A foundation. Songs in the body. Stories in the bones. Whatever it is that lets a person hear a name and already know what it means. There was a handing out, and it happened decades ago in rooms he was not in, and you cannot go back and be seven.

He would never say any of this out loud. If you asked him he would say he is enormously grateful, and he would mean it. But when the man at the front says the money passages are where most people get it wrong, and here is what the Hebrew actually shows you, he leans forward with an old familiar hope, and the hope is not really about money. The hope is: maybe this is the bit I missed.

You know that seat. Yours might be a room where everyone else did the discipleship course. It might be a family where the faith goes back four generations and you are the first. It might be that you did grow up in it and left and came back, and now you feel like a returned library book. There is a handing out you believe you missed, and it decides how you sit in a room.

Come and sit with me a minute. I want to ask you the question an apostle asked a whole church that was busy ranking itself.

What Did You Bring In With You

There is no code, and nobody brought anything in

Let me say the plain thing first, because the name over the door of this site promises a secret and I am not going to hold a man in that seat with a hint of one.

There is no code. There is no foundation that was handed out in a Sunday school in 1979 and is now closed to newcomers. There is no arrangement of Hebrew words about money that the long standing know and the recently arrived do not. And I say that as a pastor who has sat with people on both ends of that room, and I will tell you honestly: the ones who have been in it since they were seven are, very often, standing right where you are, wondering what everybody else got.

Paul was writing to a church that had begun sorting itself into tiers. Who they had been baptized by. Whose teaching they followed. Who had the more impressive gifting. And he stopped the whole conversation with a question.

For who maketh thee to differ from another? and what hast thou that thou didst not receive? now if thou didst receive it, why dost thou glory, as if thou hadst not received it?1 Corinthians 4:7

Sit in the middle of that question with me. What have you got that you did not receive. Not: what have you earned. Not: when did you arrive. What do you have that was not handed to you. And the answer, for every single person in that room on Sunday, including the woman who knows all the words and the man who has led the study for twenty years, is the same answer. Nothing. Not one thing. The people you have been quietly ranking above yourself brought nothing through the door either. They were handed it, exactly as you were, and being handed it earlier is not the same as being handed more.

You are not behind anybody in that room, and there is no foundation you arrived too late for. That is not a kindness I have arranged for a man in the fourth row from the back. It is written into 1 Corinthians 4, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a question Paul used to level a whole church and lays it under one man on a Sunday.

You have everything you have by gift, and so does the person who knew who Gideon was. Scripture says it is all received, and His Spirit is the one who makes that word received feel like relief in the chest rather than a fact in the head.

Now let me name the low place properly, because I have watched this one do real damage.

The arithmetic you run in that seat is not about Bible knowledge. Underneath it is a fear that you are permanently a guest. That there is a category called properly one of us and it was decided in childhood, and that you will always be the man they are lovely to. And here is the cruel part: the kinder they are, the more it confirms it, because you receive their kindness as hospitality rather than as family. That is exhausting, and nobody in the building can see you doing it.

You are not a guest in your own Father's house, and the hand on your shoulder is family and not hospitality. Scripture says you are no more a stranger and a foreigner, but a fellow citizen with the saints and of the household of God, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes the word household and makes it a place a man can sit down in.

And now what I owe you about your mouth, because two years and three months of quiet arithmetic will not stop because a pastor was warm about it. Jesus said a mustard seed of faith, spoken to a mountain, moves what enduring never moves. So use your voice on it. You have the standing to speak to an old fear in your own row and tell it what it is not, because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and Scripture calls that your position rather than your reward, and the Holy Spirit takes a spoken word much further than the four rows behind you.

The breakthrough

Something can stop tonight, and it is not the fact that you came in at fifty two. That is a fact and it is a good one, and I would not take a single year of your story off you. What can stop is the arithmetic.

You are held by a God who hands everything out and sells nothing, and He has never once run a class you were too late to join. That is not a feeling I am working up on a Sunday evening. It is written in 1 Corinthians 4, and it is the Spirit's own work to make a written question land in a body that has been counting for two years. What He does about your understanding, your years and the time you feel you lost is His to decide, and I say that plainly rather than sending you home with a promise nobody gave me. What is not in question is whether you were given the same thing. You were. All of it. In the October.

So sit differently next Sunday. Not further forward, unless you want to. Just without the counting.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud with your hands open. Not because the words are a qualification and God is an examiner. Because you are in Christ, and the authority to say what is true over your own life has been given to you, and it does not rise or fall with how long you have been in the room. What He does about the years, the knowledge and the way you feel on a Sunday is His to decide, and a good Father answers in ways I would not have written for Him. The Holy Spirit is the one who carries these words further than your own front room, so let Him.

  1. Back row and the songs I do not know the words to, you are a seat and you are not a verdict on when I arrived. It is written that nobody has anything they did not receive, and the God who wrote that handed out everything in this building.
  2. Fear that I am permanently the guest, get out of my chest, in the name of Jesus. The Holy Spirit never closed a register in 1979, and the hand on my shoulder is family rather than good manners.
  3. Lord, everything I have I received from You, and so did every person who was here before me. I am not doing the arithmetic any more, I am holding what You put in my hands in the October.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
