Four Christmases and a Car Deposit

This message is for the woman whose sister borrowed for a car deposit four years ago, which has never once been mentioned since, and who does the sum in her head every single time she passes that car on the drive

The car is silver and it is parked on her sister's drive, and she has to walk past it every single time she visits, which is most Sundays.

She has never once said anything about it. Not one word in four years. She is genuinely not the kind of person who would, and everybody in the family would tell you so, and they would be right.

But she does the sum. Every time. It takes about a second and a half, somewhere between the gate and the front door, and it is always exactly the same sum, and she always arrives at the same figure, and then she goes in and hugs her sister and asks about the boys.

It was a deposit. There was a bad patch and a car was needed for a job and there was no time, and she had it, and she gave it. She did not lend it in a formal way. There was no conversation about when. It was one of those transfers you do at ten at night on your phone because somebody you love is crying, and it felt, at the time, like the easiest and best thing she had ever done with money.

Four Christmases have gone by. It has never come up. Not once, not in any form, not even as a joke.

And what she cannot explain to anybody, including herself, is that she does not want the money. She genuinely does not. If her sister rang tomorrow and offered it she would say don't be ridiculous, and mean it. What she wants is for it to have been said. One sentence. Any sentence. I have not forgotten. That is all it would take, and it has not come, and every Sunday the silence around it gets one week older.

So she carries a number. Down a drive, past a silver car, into a house full of people she loves.

You know that drive. Yours might be a brother, or a friend from before, or somebody at work who never squared up after the thing with the tickets. The amount might be small enough to be embarrassing. That is often worse, because a small amount you cannot let go of feels like evidence about your character rather than about theirs.

Come and sit in the kitchen a minute. I want to tell you about a king who did the arithmetic once and then never did it again.

Four Christmases and a Car Deposit

There is no code, and there is a release

Let me say the plain thing first, because the name over the door of this site promises a secret and I am not going to hold you here hoping for one.

There is no code. There is no arrangement of Scripture that makes what you are owed come back, and nothing in this message is a technique for getting your money. If letting go were a lever you pulled to make repayment happen, it would not be letting go, it would be a slower kind of holding on, and God has never once dealt with anybody like that.

Here is what is actually in here. Jesus told a story about a servant who owed his king a sum so large it was comic, a number nobody in the room could have paid in ten lifetimes. And the man is dragged in and he begs, badly, promising things he cannot possibly do. And then this happens.

Then the lord of that servant was moved with compassion, and loosed him, and forgave him the debt.Matthew 18:27

Three verbs, and the order matters. Moved. Loosed. Forgave. The feeling came first and the accounting came last, and the accounting was not adjusted or rescheduled, it was ended. The number stopped existing.

And notice what the king does not do. He does not require an apology first. He does not wait for the servant to acknowledge the scale of it. He does not say, once you have understood what you did, we will talk. He simply moves, and looses, and forgives, and the man walks out into the daylight owing nothing.

You are not required to hold a number until somebody says the right sentence, and the releasing was never dependent on their acknowledgement. That is not a nice idea I am offering you in a kitchen. It is written into Matthew 18, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a king in a story and stands Him next to a woman walking past a silver car.

You have a God who has already canceled the unpayable thing in your own account, and He did it before you had the words for it. Scripture says He forgave us all trespasses, and His Spirit is the one who takes an old cancellation and makes it warm and present rather than merely believed.

Now let me name the ache properly, because if I get this wrong the rest is useless.

It is not the money. You have said that to yourself a hundred times and it is true. What is actually sitting on you is that a thing happened between you and somebody you love, and it was one of the most generous moments of your life, and it went into a silence, and the silence has begun to feel like being unseen. Every Sunday you walk past the evidence of your own kindness and it says nothing back to you. That is the wound. Not a deposit. Being unacknowledged by somebody whose acknowledgement you would have valued more than the money.

You are not petty, and the ache is not a flaw in your love. Scripture says that hope deferred makes the heart sick, which is God naming exactly this and calling it sickness rather than sin, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a diagnosis like that and turns it into permission to be honest.

And now what I owe you about your mouth, because a four year silence does not end because you decided to be gracious about it internally. Jesus said faith the size of a mustard seed, spoken to a mountain, does what quiet resolve never does. So speak, out loud, on your own. You have the standing to speak to a number you have carried and tell it what it is not, because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and Scripture calls that your position rather than your generosity, and the Holy Spirit takes a spoken word much further than a kitchen.

The breakthrough

Something can end today, and it is not the relationship. I am not asking you to say anything to your sister, and I would tell you plainly if I were.

You are held by a God who ended an unpayable debt out of compassion rather than out of process, and He has never once made your peace depend on somebody else's sentence. That is not a mood I am building at a kitchen table. It is written in Matthew 18, and it is the Spirit's own work to make a written parable land in a body that has walked past a silver car for four years. What He does about your sister, the money and the silence is His to decide, and I say so plainly rather than sending you off with a promise nobody gave me. What is not in question is whether you are allowed to put the number down. You are. It was never a wall, and it stopped being useful about three and a half years ago.

So let it go. Not because she deserves it. Because your hands are yours and they have been holding it long enough.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud on your own with the door shut. Not because the words are a technique and God is a mechanism. Because you are in Christ, and the authority to say what is true over your own hands has been given to you, and it does not depend on whether anything is ever said back to you. What He does about your sister and the money and the years is His to decide, and a good God answers in ways I would never have written for Him. The Holy Spirit is the one who carries these words further than a closed door, so let Him.

  1. Number I carry past that car, you are four years old and you are not my keeper. It is written that the lord of that servant was moved with compassion and forgave him the debt, and the God who wrote that keeps a better ledger than mine.
  2. Ache of being unacknowledged, get out of my chest, in the name of Jesus. The Holy Spirit calls a deferred hope a sickness rather than a fault, and He has never once told me that noticing the silence was small of me.
  3. Lord, You were moved and You loosed and You forgave, and You never waited for the right sentence from anybody first. I let it go and I am not the poorer, and my hands are free on a Sunday for the first time in four years.
