Found Not FooledPsalm 34:5

How Loudly I Told Everyone

This message is for the woman who believed it in public, told her whole small group about it, brought two friends in, and now carries not just the loss but the memory of her own voice saying it out loud

She stood up. That is the detail. There were eleven people in that living room and she was so excited that she stood up.

She had found it in the spring and it had answered something. Not money, at first, that was not why she went. It was the way it put things together, and the sense that somebody had finally explained why some people seem to move forward and others do not, and she came out of the first weekend feeling like a door had opened in her chest.

So she told the group. All of it, standing up, with her hands going, for about six minutes.

And then two of them came in with her. Two. One of whom is a friend she has known since school, who does not have money the way some of them have money.

That was two years ago. It came apart in the autumn, quietly, the way these things do, with a series of emails and a change of terms and then nothing.

She has not been to the group since March.

And here is what she plays at three in the morning, and it is not the money. It is her own voice. The exact sound of herself in that living room, standing up, telling eleven people that this was what she had been waiting for. She can hear it. She has been able to hear it for two years, on demand, in her own voice, at whatever hour.

That is the thing she is actually carrying. Not the loss. The recording.

You know that room. Yours might be a job you told everybody about, or a church you brought people to, or a person you vouched for. And you would take the financial loss twice over to unhear yourself saying what you said.

Come and sit down. Somebody has made a cake, and nobody in this room is thinking about any of it the way you think about it. There is one line in a psalm about faces, and it is going to be the thing.

How Loudly I Told Everyone

There is no code, and there is a face that is not ashamed

Let me say the plain thing first, because the name over the door of this site promises a secret and I would rather lose you now than hand you another one.

There is no code. There was nothing in that system, and there was nothing you missed in the small print, and there is no version of you who was cleverer in the spring and avoided it.

And now the thing I am not going to do, and I want you to notice me not doing it. I am not going to build your relief on tearing down whoever ran it. I do not know them. Your peace cannot be manufactured out of somebody else being a villain, because a peace like that has to keep finding new villains and it never lets a person rest.

Here is the line, and it is in the middle of a psalm written by somebody who had made an enormous public fool of himself, deliberately, in front of a foreign king, and had to be shown the door.

They looked unto him, and were lightened: and their faces were not ashamed.Psalm 34:5

Their faces were not ashamed.

Shame lives in the face. That is not a metaphor, it is where it actually goes. It is in the not looking up, the crossing of a road, the eleven months of not going to the thing on a Wednesday. Your body knows exactly where shame lives, which is why you have not been in that living room since March.

And what the psalm says is not that they were told it was fine. It says they looked at Him, and light came onto them, and their faces came up.

You are not carrying a mark on your face, and the looking up was never something you had to earn back. That is not a comfort I have arranged in a small group. It is written into Psalm 34, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a line about faces and lays it on a woman who has been playing a recording at three in the morning.

You have a face that has been looked at with light, and there is no shame on it in the only room that finally matters. Scripture says their faces were not ashamed, and His Spirit is the one who takes that and makes it something a woman can walk into a living room carrying.

Now let me name the real weight, because it is not the standing up.

It is the two friends. That is the whole of it. You could survive your own six minutes if it had only ever been your money. What you cannot get past is that one of them does not have it to lose and came because it was you saying it.

And I want to be careful and true here. That is a real thing and I am not going to wave it away. Something was cost to somebody because of your enthusiasm, and that matters and you are right that it matters.

But hear the shape of what actually happened. You did not sell anything. You told your friends about a thing you believed, because you believed it, and because you wanted good for them. The impulse that stood you up in that room was love wearing bad information.

You are not a person who takes from her friends, and being wrong in public is not the same as having deceived anybody. Scripture says that charity believeth all things, hopeth all things, which is God describing love as something that is, by design, believable and hopeful and therefore occasionally taken in, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a woman see her own six minutes in that light for the first time.

And now what I owe you about your mouth, because a recording that plays at three does not stop because somebody was kind to you over cake. Jesus said faith the size of a mustard seed, spoken to a mountain, does what replaying never does. So speak, out loud, on your own. You have the standing to speak to a memory and tell it what it is not, because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and Scripture calls that yours by position rather than by judgement, and the Holy Spirit takes a spoken word much further than a living room.

The breakthrough

Something can end today, and it is not the loss. The money is gone, and your friend's money is gone, and I am not sitting in this room implying that an afternoon has recovered it.

You are held by a God who lifts faces, and He has never once required a person to earn back the right to look up. That is not a mood I am building over cake. It is written in Psalm 34, and it is the Spirit's own work to take a line about faces and land it in a body that has not been to a living room since March. What He does about the money and the friendship and the years is His to decide, and I say so plainly rather than sending you home with a promise nobody gave me. What is not in question is whether there is shame on your face. There is not, and there has not been since the beginning, and you have been the only one looking at it.

So go back on Wednesday. Not with a speech. Just go and sit down.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud on your own before you go. Not because the words are a technique and God is a mechanism. Because you are in Christ, and the authority to say what is true over your own life has been given to you, and it does not rise or fall with what anybody in that room remembers. What He does about the money and the friendship is His to decide, and a good God answers in ways I would never have written for Him. The Holy Spirit is the one who carries these words further than this house, so let Him.

  1. Sound of my own voice in that room, you are a memory and you are not my face. It is written that they looked unto Him and were lightened and their faces were not ashamed, and the God who wrote that has never once flinched when I walked in.
  2. Recording that plays at three in the morning, get out of my house, in the name of Jesus. The Holy Spirit says charity believeth all things and hopeth all things, and what stood me up in that room was love wearing bad information.
  3. Lord, You lift faces and You have never asked anybody to earn back the right to look up. I was looking for You and somebody sold me a map, and I am not foolish, I am found, and I am going on Wednesday.
