Found Not Fooled2 Corinthians 7:10

The Hebrew Secret I Paid For

This message is for the careful student of Scripture who paid for a course on Hebrew wealth secrets, knew within an hour that it was nonsense, and is ashamed less of the money than of having wanted it to be true

He knew inside an hour. That is the part he cannot get past.

The title had the word secrets in it and he read that word and bought it anyway, at eleven at night, on a Thursday, having read a page that made a claim about a letter and a number that he could have refuted from memory.

He is not a beginner. He has read the Torah in translation more times than he can count and he has enough of the language to be dangerous and enough humility to know that is exactly what he has. He knows what a word study is worth and what it is not worth. He teaches, occasionally, and he is careful, and men come to him precisely because he is careful.

He watched the first session on the Friday. It took about forty minutes for the first genuinely false thing and about twelve more for the second, and by the end of the hour he had a page of notes that was really just a list of what was wrong with it.

He never watched another one.

And that was three years ago, and it is not the money, and it is not even the credulity, because he was not credulous, he was awake the whole time.

Here is what it is. At eleven at night on a Thursday, a careful man clicked buy on something with the word secrets in the title, because a part of him wanted there to be a secret. Not believed. Wanted.

And a man who has spent thirty years teaching people that God does not work like that discovered, in one click, that some part of him wishes He did.

That is what he has been carrying. Not a mistake. A wanting.

You know that click. Yours might not be a course. It might be a horoscope you read at a bad moment, or a superstition you would deny, or a bargain you found yourself making in a hospital corridor. The shame is not that you were deceived. You were not. It is that something in you would have liked it to be true.

Come and sit at the end of the table. There is bread and honey and it is late enough for tea. There is one verse about two kinds of sorrow, and the difference between them is the whole of what I have for you.

The Hebrew Secret I Paid For

There is no code, and there is a sorrow that finishes

Let me say the plain thing first, because the name over the door of this site promises a secret and you of all people should not have to wait for me to dismantle it.

There is no code. You knew that on the Friday, and you knew it on the Thursday, and knowing it is precisely why the last three years have been what they have been.

And I am not going to make this easier by taking the course apart. You already did that, in an hour, better than I could. Your peace is not going to come from being right about it, because you have been right about it since the Friday and it has not helped you once.

Here is the verse.

For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.2 Corinthians 7:10

Paul is distinguishing two things that feel almost identical from the inside.

The first does a job and then goes. It works repentance, which is simply a turn, and then the phrase he adds is the important one: not to be repented of. Meaning you will never look back and wish you had not felt it. It cost you something, it turned you, and then it finished and left the room.

The second one he calls the sorrow of the world, and he says it works death, which is a strong word chosen deliberately, and what he means is a sorrow that does not do a job and does not leave. It circles. It has no exit built into it. It is not remorse leading anywhere, it is a man keeping himself under something.

Three years is not godly sorrow. Godly sorrow would have been the Friday, and it would have turned you, and it would have been finished by the Sunday.

You are not under a sorrow that God assigned you, and the kind He gives has a finish built into it. That is not a comfort I have arranged over tea. It is written in 2 Corinthians 7, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a distinction Paul drew for a church and lays it on a man who has been carrying a Thursday for three years.

You have a sorrow that was always meant to leave, and the one you have been holding is a different thing entirely. Scripture says not to be repented of, which is a promise that the right kind never becomes a burden, and His Spirit is the one who makes that distinction usable rather than merely interesting.

Now let me be exact, because you would want me to be.

The wanting is not a scandal. I want to say that carefully to a man who teaches, because you will be tempted to hear it as leniency and it is not.

Every human being who has ever loved God has wanted, at some point, for there to be a lever. Not because they are shallow, but because they have watched something they could not fix. You have sat with people in situations that no amount of careful reading could touch. A man who has done that for thirty years and has never once wished for a lever has not been paying attention to the people in front of him.

That wanting is not idolatry. It is grief for other people wearing the wrong coat, and it turns up at eleven at night on a Thursday when a man is tired.

You are not disqualified by the wanting, and it was never evidence of a false teacher hiding inside a careful one. Scripture says that God knows our frame and remembers we are dust, and that He is touched with the feeling of our infirmities, which is a sentence about a High Priest who is not surprised by any of this, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that land in a man who has been prosecuting himself in a study.

And now what I owe you about your mouth, because three years of a private sorrow does not lift because a friend was precise with you over bread. Jesus said faith the size of a mustard seed, spoken to a mountain, does what analysis never does. So speak, out loud, in your own house. You have the standing to speak to a sorrow and tell it what it is not, because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and Scripture calls that yours by position rather than by rigour, and the Holy Spirit takes a spoken word much further than a study.

The breakthrough

Something can end tonight, and it is not your carefulness. Keep that. It is the good in you and it is why people come to you.

You are held by a God who built one sorrow that does its work and leaves, and He has never once assigned a man three years of the other kind. That is not a mood I am building over bread and honey. It is written in 2 Corinthians 7, and it is the Spirit's own work to take a fine distinction and land it in a body that has been holding a Thursday since. What He does about the money and the years is His to decide, and I say so plainly rather than sending you home with a promise nobody gave me. What is not in question is whether the sorrow was ever meant to stay. It was not. It should have left three years ago on a Sunday.

So say it out loud, once, and let it go with it.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud in your own study with the door shut. Not because the words are a key and God is a lock. Because you are in Christ, and the authority to say what is true over your own house has been given to you, and it does not rise or fall with one click at eleven at night. What He does about the money, the teaching and the years is His to decide, and a good God answers in ways I would never have set down for Him. The Holy Spirit is the one who carries these words further than this room, so let Him.

  1. Hour in which I knew, you are one honest recognition and you are not my accusation. It is written that godly sorrow works repentance not to be repented of, and the God who wrote that built a sorrow that finishes.
  2. Three years of the other kind, get out of my study, in the name of Jesus. The Holy Spirit shows me a High Priest touched with the feeling of my infirmities, and the wanting was grief for other people wearing the wrong coat.
  3. Lord, You made one sorrow that does its work and leaves, and You never assigned me the one that circles. I was looking for You and somebody sold me a map, and I am not foolish, I am found, and I stop paying for what You give.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
