The Boy Who Sweeps at Closing

This message is for the shopkeeper who pays his casual helper at the end of the month because that is how everyone does it, and who has never once asked the boy what the waiting costs him at home

The boy comes at four and he sweeps and he carries and he stacks the crates round the back, and he is fifteen and he does not stop moving.

He is paid at the end of the month. Everybody is paid at the end of the month. That is not cruelty, it is how a small business runs, and the man who owns the shop learned it from the man who owned the shop before him, and there has never once been a month when the boy was not paid.

Last Thursday the boy asked, at about half past six, in the doorway, with his hood already up, whether there was any chance of some of it now.

And the man said, without thinking about it at all, month end, same as always, and then something about how he would sort him out properly then. And the boy said, no, that's fine, of course, sorry, and went.

And the man has thought about that exchange every day since, and specifically about the word sorry.

Because he does not know. That is the thing he has landed on. He has employed that boy for eleven months and he does not know what is happening in his house, or whether there is a younger one, or what the twenty three days between now and the end of the month are actually made of over there. He never asked. It never occurred to him to ask, because month end is month end, and it suits the paperwork, and it has always suited him.

He is not a hard man. He carried the shopping for the woman at number nine for two years after her husband died. But he has run a shop on a rhythm that was designed around his convenience and he has never once looked at it from the other side of the counter.

You know that doorway. Yours might be an invoice you pay on your terms rather than theirs. It might be a cleaner, a cousin who did some work, a friend who fixed your car in March. There is somebody standing in a doorway of yours saying it is fine, and you have never asked them what the waiting is made of.

Come and sit down at the back. There is tea and there is the last of the bread. There is a law about wages that is older than any accounting cycle in the world.

The Boy Who Sweeps at Closing

There is no code, and there is a sundown

Let me say the plain thing first, because the name over the door of this site promises a secret and I am not going to waste a working man's evening with a hint of one.

There is no code. There is nothing here that makes a shop do better and nothing that turns fair dealing into a lever. Every one of these old laws costs the man who keeps them something and promises him nothing at all, and that is exactly how you can tell they are real.

Here it is, and it is one sentence.

Thou shalt not defraud thy neighbour, neither rob him: the wages of him that is hired shall not abide with thee all night until the morning.Leviticus 19:13

Notice what the deadline is. Not the end of the week. Not the end of the month. Not when the accounts are done. Sundown. The wages of a hired man may not sleep in your house.

And notice what surrounds it. The verse begins with defrauding and robbing, and then, in the same breath, without any change of subject, comes holding wages overnight. God puts those next to each other. Not because a man who pays late is a thief, but because the law is looking at it from the side of the person waiting, where the difference between not yet and never is a good deal thinner than it looks from behind the counter.

You are not being called a thief, and nothing in this is an accusation against a man who has never missed a month. That is not me softening it. It is what the written passage actually does: it sets the hour, and it says nothing whatever about the character of the one who has kept a different hour, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes an old wage law and lays it across a doorway at half past six.

You have a God who set the hour from the waiting man's side, and He has never once arranged a rule around the convenience of the one who holds the money. Scripture says the wages shall not abide with thee, which is a sentence about your house rather than about his patience, and His Spirit is the one who makes an ancient line land on a man rather than merely inform him.

Now let me say the thing you have already found for yourself, since you have been circling it for a week.

It was not the money he asked for. It was that he had to ask. A fifteen year old boy stood in a doorway with his hood up and made himself say it, and then apologized for it, and the apologizing is what has been following you around.

Because you know exactly what it costs to ask. Everybody who has ever had to ask knows. And you have built a rhythm in which somebody has to.

You are not a hard man, and noticing this is not the same as having done something wicked. Scripture says that the fear of the Lord is clean, and that it endureth for ever, and a clean conviction is one that makes you want to act rather than makes you want to hide, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps the difference between those two clear in a man's chest.

And now what I owe you about your mouth, because eleven months of a rhythm does not change because you felt uncomfortable about it over tea. Jesus said faith the size of a mustard seed, spoken to a mountain, does what intending never does. So speak, out loud, in your own shop. You have the standing to speak to a custom in your own house and tell it what it is not, because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and Scripture calls that yours by position rather than by trade, and the Holy Spirit takes a spoken word much further than a shop door.

The breakthrough

Something can change tomorrow, and it is not your accounting. I am not asking you to rebuild the business tonight, and I would say so if I were.

You are held by a God who set sundown as the hour and set it from the waiting man's side, and He has never once written a rule around the comfort of the one holding the purse. That is not a mood I am building over tea. It is written in Leviticus 19, and it is the Spirit's own work to make an old law land in a body that has heard a boy say sorry in a doorway. What He does about the shop, the street and the coming year is His to decide, and I say so plainly rather than sending you home with a promise nobody gave me. What is not in question is whether one person can be paid today. One person can.

So pay him. Not as a gesture. As the hour.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud in the shop with the shutters coming down. Not because the words are a lever and God is a mechanism. Because you are in Christ, and the authority to say what is true over your own house has been given to you, and it does not rise or fall with what the takings are. What He does about the trade and the years is His to decide, and a good Provider answers in ways I would never have written for Him. The Holy Spirit is the one who carries these words further than this street, so let Him.

  1. Month end that everybody keeps, you are a custom and you are not a law. It is written that the wages of the hired shall not stay with me until morning, and the God who wrote that set the hour Himself.
  2. Comfort of doing it the way it has always been done, get out of my shop, in the name of Jesus. The Holy Spirit makes a clean conviction, one that moves a man to act rather than to hide, and He has not called me a thief tonight.
  3. Lord, You set sundown as the hour and You set it from the side of the one who is waiting, and my convenience was never what the rule was built around. What I owe I do not hold overnight, and one person goes home paid today.
