The Money From My Mother's Purse

This message is for the grown man who borrowed from his mother in a bad year and has never mentioned it since, who kisses her cheek every Sunday with the thing sitting unnamed between them

She keeps the purse in the drawer under the television, and she got it out at the kitchen table on a Wednesday in a year he does not like to think about.

She did not make him ask twice. That is the part he has never got over. She did not ask what it was for, or when, or whether he had spoken to anybody. She counted it out on the oilcloth and pushed it across and then got up and put the kettle on so that he would not have to look at her while he put it in his pocket.

He was thirty four. He had two children and a job that had stopped being a job in October.

That was seven years ago and it has never been mentioned by either of them. Not once. Not on a birthday, not at a funeral, not in the year things came right again, and they did come right, more or less.

He goes on a Sunday. He takes the shopping in and puts the heavy things on the high shelf because she will not ask anybody else to. He kisses her cheek at the door. And every single Sunday, somewhere between the car and the kettle, he thinks about the oilcloth, and then he thinks about something else on purpose.

He could raise it. He has had the sentence ready for about three years. But raising it now means explaining why he did not raise it for four years before that, and there is no good answer to that except the true one, which is that he was ashamed, and a man does not want to say the word ashamed to his mother at seventy nine.

So he takes the shopping in.

You know that doorway. Yours might be a father, or an aunt, or the friend who helped when nobody else did. Maybe you paid it back years ago and never said thank you properly. Maybe it is not money at all. There is a thing that has never been named between you and somebody who loves you, and the not naming has become a small permanent room in the house.

Come and sit at the table a minute. There is a man in the Gospels who stood up at his own dinner and said something out loud in front of everybody, and it changed the whole room.

The Money From My Mother's Purse

There is no code, and there is a today

Let me say the plain thing first, because the name over the door of this site promises a secret and I am not going to hold you here waiting for one.

There is no code. There is nothing in Scripture that makes seven years of silence dissolve, and nothing here is a technique. And I will say the next thing plainly too, because this is where people get hurt: if you cannot pay her back, you cannot, and nothing in this article says that a man who cannot pay is a man who has failed. That is not what is being asked of you this Sunday.

Now. There was a short man in a tree, and a house full of people who were furious that Jesus had gone into it, and at some point in that meal Zacchaeus stood up.

And Zacchaeus stood, and said unto the Lord: Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken any thing from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold.Luke 19:8

Notice three things.

He stood. It was said out loud, in a room, on his feet, which is a completely different act from deciding it privately and getting on with it.

He said it that day. Not once the accounts were reconciled. Not when he had worked out the exact figures for each name. That day, at that table, while the meal was still going.

And Jesus was already in his house. The standing up did not buy the visit. The visit came first, before a single word was said about restoring anything. Grace walked through that door and then a man stood up.

You are not being asked to settle anything before you speak, and the standing up was never what purchased the welcome. That is not a soft reading I have arranged for a Sunday. It is the order of events in Luke 19, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a man on his feet at a dinner and stands him beside a son in a doorway with the shopping.

You have a God who came in first, and He has never once required the accounts before the honesty. Scripture puts the visit before the vow, and His Spirit is the one who makes an old order of events into something a man can actually do at seventy nine year old kitchen table.

Now let me name the true thing, because we are family here and I am not going to be delicate about it.

The silence is not about money. Your mother has almost certainly not thought about that purse in years, and if she has, she has thought about it the way mothers do, which is with satisfaction. What is sitting between you is not her ledger. It is yours.

You have been carrying a Wednesday in October when your mother did not make you ask twice, and you have never once been able to say out loud what that did to you, and every Sunday for seven years the not saying has been the price of admission.

And here is the hard, tender thing. She is seventy nine. There are a finite number of Sundays in that drawer, and you have been spending them on a silence that is protecting nobody.

You are not a man who failed his mother, and being helped by her was never a debt against your name. Scripture says that a good man leaveth an inheritance to his children's children, and the woman who counted that money out on the oilcloth was doing exactly what she was made for, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets that land in a man's chest instead of glancing off it.

And now what I owe you about your mouth, because seven years of Sundays does not change because a friend was warm to you at a table. Jesus said faith the size of a mustard seed, spoken to a mountain, does what deciding never does. So speak, out loud, first here and then there. You have the standing to speak to a silence in your own family and tell it what it is not, because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and Scripture calls that yours by position rather than by earning, and the Holy Spirit takes a spoken word much further than a front room.

The breakthrough

Something can be said this Sunday, and it is not the money. The money may take years or may never happen, and I am not going to stand in your mother's front room implying that a good conversation has settled it.

You are held by a God who walked into the house first and let the standing up come afterwards, and He has never once required a man to have the money before he was allowed to speak. That is not a mood I am building at a table. It is written in Luke 19, and it is the Spirit's own work to make an old dinner land in a body that has kissed his mother's cheek for seven years with something unsaid behind it. What He does about the money and the years and how many Sundays are left is His to decide, and I say that plainly rather than sending you home with a promise nobody gave me. What is not in question is whether it can be named today. It can, and naming it is the whole of what is being asked.

So say it. In the kitchen, while the kettle is going, which is where she put you the first time so you would not have to look at her.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud in the car before you go in. Not because the words are a technique and God is a mechanism. Because you are in Christ, and the authority to say what is true over your own house has been given to you, and it does not rise or fall with what you can pay back. What He does about the money and the years is His to decide, and a good Father answers in ways I would never have written for Him. The Holy Spirit is the one who carries these words further than a driveway, so let Him.

  1. Thing that sits between us on Sundays, you are unnamed and you are not unnoticed. It is written that a man stood up in his own house and said it out loud that day, and the God who was at that table did not wait for him to be able to pay.
  2. Shame that has kept my mouth shut for seven years, get out of this car, in the name of Jesus. The Holy Spirit never once called being helped by my mother a debt against my name, and He is not waiting for me to be able to settle it.
  3. Lord, You went into the house before the man stood up, and the welcome was never bought by the standing. What I owe I do not hold overnight, and I am saying it to her today while the kettle is going.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
