Honest TodayMatthew 21:28-30

The Son Who Said He Would Go

This message is for the woman who promised a friend the childcare hours that would let her take the job, said yes gladly, and has canceled three times without ever saying she cannot do it

She said yes in a kitchen with music on, and she meant it with her whole chest, and both of them cried a little bit.

Her friend had been offered the job. A proper one, with a badge and a rota and a wage that would change what that flat feels like on a Tuesday. And the only obstacle in the whole world was Wednesday and Thursday afternoons, three till six, and she said, that is nothing, I have got them, do it.

That was in May.

She did it the first week and it was chaos and it was fine. She did it the second week. The third week she messaged at half past one saying she was so sorry, something had come up, and her friend said no problem at all and found somebody. The fifth week she canceled again. Two weeks ago she canceled a third time, and this time she left it until twenty past two.

Here is what she has not said, once, in three months: I cannot do this.

Because saying that means taking back the kitchen. It means unsaying a thing that had two women crying over it. And her friend is managing, somehow, with a patchwork of people and a lot of favors, and every time she says no problem at all it gets one notch harder to say the true thing.

So she keeps the arrangement technically alive, and cancels inside it, which is the worst of all possible worlds for the woman on the rota.

You know that message. Yours might be a lift you offer and rearrange, a job you took on for a group, a Saturday you said yes to and have moved twice. You are not a flake. You are somebody who says yes out of love and then discovers the shape of their week, and cannot find a way to say so without feeling like they have withdrawn the love as well.

Come and sit down and let the children carry on. There is a story Jesus told with two sons in it, and it lands nowhere near where people expect.

The Son Who Said He Would Go

There is no code, and there is a vineyard today

Let me say the plain thing first, because the name over the door of this site promises a secret and I am not going to keep you sitting here waiting for one.

There is no code. There is nothing in Scripture that puts eight extra hours in a week, and nothing here is a technique. And let me say the second thing plainly, because women get preached at badly on this: nothing in this article says you must find a way to do Wednesdays. You may not be able to, and being unable is not a moral failure, and you are allowed to say so out loud.

Now, the story.

But what think ye? A certain man had two sons; and he came to the first, and said, Son, go work to day in my vineyard. He answered and said, I will not: but afterward he repented, and went. And he came to the second, and said likewise. And he answered and said, I go, sir: and went not.Matthew 21:28-30

Watch what happens to the second son, because he is the interesting one and he is nearly always the one people are.

He does not lie in any ordinary sense. I go, sir, is not a plot. It is the answer that costs nothing in the moment, said to a face he loves, and I would guess he meant it while he said it. What he never does is go back and say the other thing. That is the whole of his fault. Not the yes. The silence afterwards.

And the first son is rude. Straight up, he says no. But then he goes, and Jesus asks the crowd which of the two did the will of his father, and everybody in the crowd knows the answer.

This is a story about which sentence you can build a day on.

You are not the villain in that story, and the failure in it was never the yes. That is not a soft reading arranged for a hard subject. It is what the written parable actually turns on, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes an old vineyard story and lays it across a message sent at twenty past two.

You have a God who prefers a hard no to a soft yes, and He has never once needed you to perform an ability you do not have. Scripture puts the honest refuser above the polite absentee, and His Spirit is the one who takes that ranking and makes it usable in an actual friendship this afternoon.

Now let me get to the real thing, because you are not a disorganized woman.

What you cannot bear is not the admin. It is what taking it back seems to say about the moment in the kitchen. In there, for about four minutes, you were the friend who made the whole thing possible, and both of you felt it, and every cancellation since has been you trying to keep that woman alive rather than trying to get out of Wednesday.

That is love doing something clumsy. But look at what it is costing on the other side of it: your friend cannot plan. She would rather have a clear no in May than a maybe in August, because a no can be worked around and a maybe cannot.

You are not withdrawing your love by telling the truth about your week, and one honest sentence does not undo the kitchen. Scripture says that a faithful friend is a strong defense, and let your yea be yea and your nay be nay, which is God asking for a friendship that can be leaned on rather than one that always sounds nice, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that land as freedom rather than as rebuke.

And now what I owe you about your mouth, because three months of this does not end because you understood it well. Jesus said faith the size of a mustard seed, spoken to a mountain, does what intending never does. So say it out loud in your own front room first. You have the standing to speak to a fear in your own house and tell it what it is not, because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and Scripture calls that yours by position rather than by usefulness, and the Holy Spirit takes a spoken word much further than a room with the television on.

The breakthrough

Something can be settled today, and it is not your diary. I cannot make Wednesdays work and I am not going to sit in your front room implying that a good conversation has.

You are held by a God who put an honest no above a polite absence, and He has never once asked you to keep a promise going by canceling inside it. That is not a mood I am building over the noise of children. It is written in Matthew 21, and it is the Spirit's own work to take an old vineyard story and land it in a body that has sent three messages at twenty past two. What He does about your friend, her job and her rota is His to decide, and I say that plainly rather than sending you off with a promise nobody gave me. What is not in question is whether the truth can be said today. It can, and it is one message, and it is kinder than three months of nearly.

So send it. Whichever way the answer goes.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud with the phone in your hand before you send it. Not because the words are a technique and God is a mechanism. Because you are in Christ, and the authority to say what is true over your own house has been given to you, and it does not rise or fall with how useful you have managed to be. What He does about your friend and her job is His to decide, and a good God answers in ways I would never have written for Him. The Holy Spirit is the one who carries these words further than this room, so let Him.

  1. Third cancellation I sent, you are a kindness gone wrong and you are not who I am. It is written that one son said I go, sir, and went not, and the God who told that story wanted the going and not the saying.
  2. Fear that the truth takes back the kitchen, get out of my house, in the name of Jesus. The Holy Spirit asks for a yes that is yes and a no that is no, and one honest sentence does not undo one word of what I meant in May.
  3. Lord, You put an honest no above a polite absence and You never needed me to perform something I do not have. My word is good today, and the message is going now, whichever way it goes.
