Freely GivenProverbs 8:1-4

Wisdom Is Shouting in the Street

This message is for the man who waits behind after every meeting to ask the oldest believer in the room what it is he knows and is not saying, and goes home certain he was almost told something

He is always the last one out, and everybody has stopped commenting on it.

The chairs go up in stacks of eight. The urn ticks as it cools. Somebody sweeps under the table where the bread was, and somebody else carries the flasks down to a car, and he stays, folding one chair very slowly, watching the old man at the front who is putting his glasses away.

Then he goes over. He always goes over.

He asks it a different way each time, because asking it the same way twice would be admitting he is asking. Tonight it comes out as: what would you say is the thing, really, underneath all of it, if you had to say one thing. And the old man looks at him with enormous kindness and says something like, brother, love God and love the person in front of you, and the rest sorts itself out.

And he nods, and thanks him, and goes down the stairs past the shop with the shutters down, and gets into the car, and sits.

Because that was not it. That was the answer you give in a room. He is certain, with a certainty he could not defend to anyone, that there is another sentence, and that men who have walked with God for fifty years hold it between themselves, and that it comes out only when you have earned the right to hear it. He has been almost told it perhaps nine times now. Every one of those nine times, the conversation stopped one inch short and somebody's wife came to say the car was ready.

He drives home past the shuttered row of shops and the lit window of the bakery, and his thumb finds the wheel, and the thought sits with him the whole way: they know something. I keep being sent home with the beginner's answer.

You know that car journey. Perhaps yours is a group chat you read and never post in. Perhaps it is the friend who quotes a teacher you have never heard of and you nod as though you have. Perhaps it is simply the feeling, in a room full of people singing, that everyone else received a briefing and you came in halfway through.

I have sat in that car. Come and sit under the light on the step with me for a minute, because there is bread out and I want to tell you where the thing you are hunting actually is.

Wisdom Is Shouting in the Street

There is no code, and she is shouting where everyone can hear

Let me say it plainly first, because the name over the door of this site promises a secret, and I will not let you keep reading in hope of one.

There is no code. There is no sentence the elders keep between themselves. There is no arrangement of words about money, or about anything else, that God gives to the trusted and withholds from the rest. If there were, He would be the sort of host who feeds a few in a back room and leaves the rest in the courtyard with the smell of it, and I have eaten at His table, and He is not that host.

And the old man was not fobbing you off. That really was it. Love God, love the one in front of you. It sounded small because you were braced for something expensive.

Now hear what Scripture does with your suspicion. It does not answer it politely. It puts wisdom out in the road and gives her a raised voice.

Doth not wisdom cry? and understanding put forth her voice? She standeth in the top of high places, by the way in the places of the paths. She crieth at the gates, at the entry of the city, at the coming in at the doors: Unto you, O men, I call; and my voice is to the sons of man.Proverbs 8:1-4

Look where she is standing. Not in a private room. At the gate, which in that city was the busiest place there was, where the traders argued and the judges sat and every single person entering had to pass. At the entry. At the coming in at the doors. And her voice is not lowered for the qualified. Unto you, O men, I call.

You are not standing outside a conversation, and nothing is being said above your head. That is not a comfort I have arranged for you on a doorstep. It is written into the eighth chapter of Proverbs, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a shout at a city gate and lands it in a parked car outside a block of flats.

You have already heard the thing you keep waiting to be told. You heard it tonight, standing by the stacked chairs, and you walked away from it because it arrived in ordinary clothes. Scripture says wisdom is crying out in the open, and His Spirit is the one who makes an ordinary sentence suddenly weigh what it always weighed.

Let me name the ache underneath this properly, because a man does not stay behind nine times over a curiosity.

Somewhere you concluded that you are the kind of man things get held back from. Perhaps a family thing. Perhaps a job where the real decisions happened before the meeting you were invited to. And you have carried that shape into the house of God and put it on Him, and now you stand in a room where He is speaking freely and you strain for the whisper you assume is happening elsewhere. That is not greed for knowledge. That is a wound, and it followed you in through the door.

You have a Father who does not hold private policy, and He has never once briefed a few and left you guessing. Scripture says that everything He heard from His Father, Jesus made known to His friends, and the Spirit who carried that word to John's pen is the same Spirit sitting in the passenger seat of that car.

And now the part I owe you about your mouth. The wound does not lift by being reasoned with, and it will not lift because I have been kind to you tonight. Jesus said that faith as small as a mustard seed, spoken to a mountain, does what staring at it never does. So speak. You have the standing to tell an old lie in your own car what it is not, because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and Scripture calls that your position rather than your reward, and the Holy Spirit carries a spoken word further than the windscreen.

The breakthrough

Something can finish tonight, and it is not the question. I cannot promise you a life without further questions and I am not going to pretend to. It is the waiting behind.

You are held by a God who shouts at the gate, and He has never spoken one word about you that He was not willing to say in front of you. That is not a mood I am working up on a doorstep. It is written in Proverbs 8, and it is the Spirit's own work to make written words arrive in a body sitting in a cold car. What He does about your work, your money and your standing among men is His to decide, and I say that plainly rather than letting you assume I promised more. What is not in question is whether He is holding something back from you. He is not. He never was.

So go home. Not defeated. Carrying what you were already carrying, and knowing now that it is the whole of it.

Declare this over yourself

Say these standing, with your hand flat on the door if it helps. Not because the words are a key and God is a lock. Because you are in Christ, and the authority to name what is true over your own house has been given to you, and it does not depend on how many years you have walked or who has taken you seriously. What He does about your position among men is His to decide, and a good Father answers in ways I would not have chosen for Him. The Holy Spirit is the one who carries these words past your own street, so let Him.

  1. Stacked chairs and the last of the tea, you are not where the real word gets handed out. It is written that wisdom cries aloud at the gates and at the entry of the city, and what God shouts in the street He never whispered to a few.
  2. Old suspicion that I am the last to be told, get out of this car and out of this house, in the name of Jesus. The Holy Spirit does not brief a few and leave the rest guessing, and I am not standing at the edge of a room He has already walked me into.
  3. Lord, You call from the top of the high places, and Your voice is to the sons of men, and my ear is one of the ones You meant. I am not waiting behind after the meeting any more, I am answering the One who has been shouting.
