The Words Everybody Else Seemed to Know

The study Bible cost her four pounds in a charity shop and somebody else's name is inside the front cover in fountain pen.

She reads it at the kitchen table on Saturday mornings, before the house wakes up, with the back door open a little because she likes the sound of the garden. She left all this when she was twenty two. She is forty one now, and she came back to it the long way round, by herself, without telling anybody, which is how she does most things.

And she has a list. It is in her phone in a note called simply Words. Propitiation. Firstfruits. Covenant, which she thinks she knows and is not sure. Righteousness, which she definitely does not know, and which appears roughly everywhere. She looks them up and the definitions use each other, and she comes away with the strong feeling that she has been given the outer layer and that underneath there is a real meaning that people who stayed have and she does not.

Last Sunday she listened to two men talking about a passage in a podcast, and one of them said, and of course the Hebrew here is doing something the English simply cannot carry. And they both laughed a little, in a friendly way, about how much gets lost.

She stopped the podcast and sat with her hands around the mug and did not start it again.

Because that, right there, is the door closing. That is the sentence that says: there is an inside, it has a language, and you were out of the room during the years when people learn it. And she is not bitter about it. She is something quieter and worse than bitter. She has begun to assume it about herself, the way you assume the weather.

You know that table. Maybe you left too, and came back at an odd angle. Maybe you never left and still never learned the words. Maybe your version is a room where people pray out loud in a shape you have never been taught and you keep your eyes closed for a beat too long afterwards. There is a vocabulary somewhere that you believe is the actual door, and every time somebody uses it lightly, the door closes another inch.

Leave the mug. Come and sit by the back door with me for a minute. I want to tell you about a day when the whole thing was shouted in the street.

There is no code, and He shouted it in a crowd

Let me say the plain thing before anything else, because the name over the door of this site promises a secret and I would rather you left now than read on hoping.

There is no code. There is no vocabulary that is the actual door. There is no arrangement of Hebrew or Greek about money or about anything else that God has placed behind a language so that only the trained get through. Words are lovely and study is good and I am not going to be rude about scholarship, which has fed me for years. But the meaning of God was never locked in the vocabulary, and the Holy Spirit was never issued to graduates.

Here is what actually happened on the last and greatest day of a festival, in a packed city, with everybody there.

In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.John 7:37

Notice three things and let them sit. He stood, which means He made Himself visible. He cried, which is a raised voice, in public, over the noise of a crowd on the biggest day of the year. And the word He used for who it was aimed at was any.

Not: any who have understood. Not: any who were raised in it. Not: any who can define the term. Any who are thirsty. Thirst is the entire qualification, and thirst is the one thing on earth that needs no vocabulary, because a thirsty person knows they are thirsty without having a word for it.

You are not standing outside a language, and there is no door here that words open. That is not a comfort I have arranged for a woman with a four pound Bible. It is written into John 7, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a shout in a crowded city and lands it on a kitchen table with the back door open.

You have been invited by name in the only way that matters, because any includes you and it always did. Scripture put the invitation in the widest word available, and His Spirit is the one who makes a wide word feel personal rather than general.

Now let me sit in the quiet place with you, because I do not want to lift this too fast.

The list in your phone is not really a list of words. It is a list of proofs. Every entry on it is evidence for a case you have been building against yourself since you were twenty two, and the case says: you left, and things closed behind you, and you can come back but you cannot come back all the way. And you have been so gentle with everybody else about their journey. You have never once said a hard word to a friend about coming back. You just quietly exempt yourself.

You are not on probation, and nothing closed behind you when you walked out at twenty two. Scripture says that the one who comes to Him will in no wise be cast out, and no wise means no version of it, no clause, no fine print, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a sentence like that and makes it a place to stand instead of a verse to admire.

And now what I owe you about your mouth, because a case built over nineteen years does not close because someone was kind to you on a Saturday morning. Jesus said that faith the size of a mustard seed, spoken to a mountain, does what quietly enduring never does. So say it out loud in your own kitchen with the garden making its noise. You have the standing to speak to an old case against yourself and tell it what it is not, because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and Scripture calls that your position rather than your achievement, and the Holy Spirit carries a spoken word past your back door and further than you can follow it.
