The laptop is on the ironing board, because the ironing board is the only surface in the flat at the right height for standing and watching at the same time.
She has the first session on. It is genuinely good. The worship went twenty minutes over and she stood in her socks with the iron cooling and her hands up and something in her chest came loose that has not come loose in a while. Then the man came to the front and read from Isaiah and started to say, now here is what most people never get told about this, and the picture cut to a still card with a logo on it, and a line of text underneath explaining that the remainder of this session is available to pass holders.
She stands there for a second with the iron in her hand.
She had looked at the pass, back in June. She got as far as the payment page and then did the sum she always does, which is not really a sum, it is a sentence: that is a month of something else. So she closed it, and told herself the livestream would be plenty, and it was, for twenty five minutes.
And now she is standing in a quiet flat in her socks, and the thought is back, and it is not even about the conference any more.
The thought says: the actual thing is in that room. The bit that changes people is behind the card with the logo. There is a version of the Christian life that people with money get, where they hear the whole session and they meet the speaker afterwards and somebody prays for them by name, and you get the first twenty five minutes and a still image. You are on the outside of it, and you have always been on the outside of it, and you always will be, because the outside is a place people like you live.
Then she turns the iron off, because she has stopped ironing, and she has not noticed until now.
You know that flat. Maybe your version is a book you did not buy, a course your friend went on, a church whose small groups all seem to happen at a time you are at work. Maybe it is not money at all, maybe it is a room where people talk with a confidence you have never had. But there is a card with a logo on it somewhere in your head, and you are on the wrong side of it, and you have made your peace with that so quietly you would not have called it a wound.
Put the iron down. I want to tell you about the one time somebody tried to buy this, and what happened to the price.

There is no code, and there is no ticket
Let me say the plain thing first, because the name over the door of this site promises a secret, and I would rather lose you now than hold you with a hint.
There is no code. There is no teaching about money, or about anything, that God has arranged for the people who can pay to be in the room. Rooms cost money to hire and chairs cost money to put out and none of that is wickedness, and I am not going to spend your evening being angry with anybody. But the gift itself has never had a price, and there is one moment in the New Testament where somebody tried to attach one, and it is worth standing still in front of.
A man had been watching the apostles. He had seen the Spirit given, and he wanted it, and he wanted it enough to reach into his own money for it, which is more honest than most of us are. And Peter, who was not a gentle man on this particular subject, said this.
Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money.Acts 8:20
Sit with how hard that is. Peter does not name a fee and lower it. He does not say, not for that amount. He refuses the entire category. He will not let the gift of God be a thing that has a price at all, at any level, for anyone, because the second it has a price it is not a gift, and if it is not a gift then God is a vendor, and God is not a vendor.
You are not on the wrong side of a card with a logo on it, and there is no session you have been priced out of. That is not encouragement I have manufactured for a woman in her socks. It is written into Acts 8 in the hardest sentence Peter ever spoke, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes an apostle's refusal and lands it on an ironing board in a quiet flat.
You have the Giver Himself, and He has never once accepted payment from anybody. Scripture says the Spirit is given, not sold, and His Spirit is the one who makes an ancient refusal feel like a hand on your shoulder tonight.
Now let me name the real weight, because this was never about a conference pass.
The sum you did in June was not a sum. It was a sentence, and the sentence was about you. That is a month of something else means, underneath, people like me do not get the whole session. And you have been carrying that sentence into rooms for years, and it decides in advance where you sit, and whether you put your hand up, and whether you believe the good part is happening somewhere you are not. You did not invent that sentence. Somebody handed it to you, and life kept confirming it, and you filed it under realism.
You are not the overflow room, and you were never the cheap seat in your own Father's house. Scripture says He has made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus, and that word together is not a rounding error, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a written word and makes it a place you are standing rather than a verse you know.
And now the part I owe you about your mouth, because a sentence like that does not leave because I disagreed with it warmly. Jesus said a mustard seed of faith, spoken to a mountain, moves what no amount of quiet enduring moves. So speak to it. You have the standing to tell an old sentence about yourself what it is not, because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and Scripture calls that your position and not your prize, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries a word out of a small flat and into the air where it does its work.
Something can end tonight, and it is not your budget. I cannot change your budget and I will not pretend that a good feeling has changed it. It is the sentence.
You are held by a God who refused to put a price on His own gift, and He has never held the good part back behind a payment page. That is not a mood I am working up in a flat with the iron cooling. It is written in Acts 8, and it is the Spirit's own work to take what Peter said standing up and make it land in a body standing in socks. What He does about your money, your job and your June is His to decide, and I say that out loud rather than letting you hear a promise I was not given to make. What is not in question is whether you were let in. You were let in.
So turn the laptop off if you want to. Not in protest. Because the room you are in is a room He is in, and the session did not stop.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, standing, hand on the closed laptop. Not because the words are a payment and God is a till. Because you are in Christ, and the authority to say what is true over your own house has been given to you, and it does not rise or fall with what is in the account. What He does about the room, the job and the money is His to decide, and a good Father answers in ways I would not have written down for Him. The Holy Spirit is the one who carries these words out of this flat, so let Him.
- Screen that went dark at the good part, you are a ticket barrier and not a curtain in a temple. It is written that the gift of God is not purchased, and the God who wrote that has never once counted the seats in a room.
- Sentence I have been saying about myself since June, get out of my mouth, in the name of Jesus. The Holy Spirit did not check an account before He filled a room, and I am not the overflow of my own Father's house.
- Lord, You give and You have never sold, and the room You are in tonight is the room I am standing in. I am not watching the half I was allowed any more, I am in the meeting.
