Freely GivenIsaiah 55:1

There Is No Back Room

This message is for the night shift care worker who typed the search with one thumb on the walk from the car park to the back door, sure that somebody somewhere was told a thing about God and money that she was not, and who needs to be released from hunting for a secret that does not exist

She typed it with one thumb, on the walk from the staff car park to the back door of the home, and she typed it the way you would say a thing you did not want overheard. Three words and a question mark. Then she put the phone in her tunic pocket, because the door had a keypad and the keypad had a queue: two of the day staff going out with their coats already on, the cook's lad wheeling the bins, and the agency nurse who never remembers the number.

Inside, the handover was already running. Six of them round the table in the staff room, the kettle on its third boil, the diary open, somebody's birthday cake under cling film that nobody had cut. Room nine had had a bad afternoon. Room four's daughter had rung again. She wrote it all down, and under the table, without looking, she felt the phone in her pocket where the search was still open, waiting for her to come back to it on her break.

It was not the first time she had looked. That was the part she would not have said out loud at that table. The month had come up longer than the money again, and somewhere in the third week of it a thought had arrived that was not really about money at all. It was this: that there is a thing about God and money that some people know, and it was never told to her, and if she could just find the words for it the whole shape of the month would change. That is what she was hunting for at the keypad. Not a fortune. A sentence somebody had left out.

Now, you. You came here looking for the thing nobody told you. Say it plainly, because there is no shame in it, and because it needs to be said plainly so the rest of this can be. You typed something like she typed. And I am going to tell you the truth about it inside the next minute, not at the end, because you have waited long enough at enough doors: there is no back room. There is no code. Nobody was told a thing about God and money that you were not told. What God has to say about money is written down, in full, in a book you can hold, and the first thing He says about it in the passage I am about to hand you is that the table has no price on it.

There Is No Back Room

The prophet was shouting it in the street

Isaiah does not whisper this. He stands in the road and calls it out like a man selling something, except that the whole point of the call is that he is not.

Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.Isaiah 55:1

Read the shape of that. Come, everyone. Not everyone who has been told the word. He who has no money, come. Not he who has found the missing sentence. Buy, he says, and then he empties the word of everything that would normally make it a word: without money and without price. It is a market with no back room. Everything on the stall is the stall. There is nothing under the counter, and there never was, and the prophet is standing in the road shouting so that nobody walks past thinking the good part is kept for people who know.

You are not behind on anything God meant you to have. I am not saying that as a kindness. It is what the written word says, the hidden things belong to the Lord and the revealed things belong to us, and it is His Spirit who takes what is revealed and makes it live in an ordinary person on an ordinary shift. There is no second layer under the first one. What He has said about money He has said out loud, to everyone, and it was never a technique.

And here is what He actually said, since the search was real and deserves a real answer. Corners of a field left uncut on purpose, so somebody with nothing could eat from what was never the owner's to keep. Wages paid before the sun went down, so the man who earned them was not lying awake. Debts let go in the seventh year. A trumpet in the fiftieth that gave a whole life back. Enough bread for one day, gathered in the morning, and the man who hoarded it found it spoiled by night. None of that is a way of getting. All of it is a way of living. It is not what a person does to God to make Him move. It is what a people looked like when God had already moved.

Nobody is going to make you feel foolish for looking

Let me say the second thing as plainly as the first, because it is the thing the woman at the handover table would need to hear before she could hear anything else. You were not stupid to look. A month that comes up short is a real weight, and a real weight makes a person reach, and a person who reaches for God, even by three words typed on a walk, was reaching in the right direction, and it is the Spirit of God who stirs a person to reach at all. Jesus said seek and you will find, it is written plainly, and He did not add, unless you seek in a hurry on your phone.

The searching was not the problem. What the searching was hunting for was the problem, and it was hunting for something that a hundred voices had told it was there. That is not your failure. It is what happens when a promise gets made in the name of God that God never made.

You have already been given the whole of what He freely gives, and it was never in a back room. Jesus put it in one sentence, written down in Matthew 10:8, to men who owned almost nothing: freely you received, freely give. Received, past tense, before they had done anything at all. And the Holy Spirit is the one who was given, not sold, poured out and never rationed, so the very thing you have been trying to find the words for is already the thing living in you.

The stall in the road is not short of anything. What it does not have is a price, and the reason you could not find the price is that there was never one to find.

The breakthrough

So the moment is here, and it is not on some other page. It is in the search still open in your pocket.

You are free of the hunt right now, because the thing it was hunting was never there. That is not my opinion. It is Isaiah, written down and still shouting in the road, come without money and without price, and it is the Spirit of God who was freely given saying the same thing inside you, quieter, on the walk from the car to the door. There is no sentence you missed. There is no room behind the room. There is a God who has already said everything He is going to say about money, said it to everyone, and put none of it behind a door.

You can put the hunt down without putting the month down. The month is still long. The need is still real, and it is heard, and it belongs at His table like everything else. What goes is the suspicion that you were being kept out of something. You were not. Nobody was.

Nothing here promises the arithmetic changes tonight. God does what God does with the month, and however He answers, He is not answering from a room you could not get into.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, in the room you are in, before you go back to whatever the shift needs. Your standing to say them was given to you: Christ is in you and you are in Him, and an ambassador speaks with the King's authority and none of his own. Scripture is the ground under each line and the Holy Spirit is the current in them, not the wording. The mountain in front of you has been running for weeks and it is a small one: the hunt for a sentence somebody left out. Speak to it. Then speak to God about the month, plainly, and however He answers, He is answering from a table with no back room.

  1. Search bar, you have had my thumb for a month of nights and you are getting nothing tonight but the delete key. Isaiah says come, you who have no money, come and eat, and the table he was pointing at has no back room.
  2. Feeling that I am behind on a secret, you are a lie in a nice font and I put you down in the name of Jesus. The revealed things are mine, the written word says so, and the Spirit who was freely given was never once for sale.
  3. Lord, You are not hiding a key from me and You never were. I thank You, because what You give, You give without price, Your Spirit hands it over with no counter between us, and I have stopped looking for the door You never locked.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
