There Is No Door Behind the Door

This message is for the man who has decided that the money passages in the Hebrew Scriptures were written for insiders and that without a teacher who has the tradition he is reading a locked book

He sits at the back of the lecture theater because the back is where you can leave without anybody watching you go, and he has never once left early.

It is the fourth of six evening lectures on the law codes, and it costs almost nothing, and he has taken thirty pages of notes across the four. He is fifty five. He works in logistics. He has read the first five books of the Bible eleven times, and the harvest laws so often that he can hear the rhythm of them before he reaches the words.

At the end he waits until the room is nearly empty, then goes down the steps to the front with his notebook against his chest, and asks the question he has come four weeks to ask. He asks it badly, because he has rehearsed it too much. Something like: is there an oral part. Is there a key to these passages that goes with them, that gets handed on, that you would only have if somebody gave it to you.

And the lecturer, who is a kind man packing a bag, says: no. It is all in the text. That is rather the point of a text.

He thanks him, and goes out into the car park, and stands in the cold with his notebook against his chest, and he does not believe him.

That is the honest bit. He does not believe him. Because there is a shape in him, older than the lectures, that says: the good thing has a door, and behind the door there is another door, and the people who belong were shown where the second one is when they were young. He has a shelf of commentaries at home that he bought looking for the second door. He has written twice to a scholar overseas and received one very polite reply that he has read perhaps forty times, hunting the sentence that might be a hint.

You know that car park. Yours may be a course you nearly enrolled on. It may be a suspicion that the plain reading is for beginners and the real reading is somewhere else. It may be as simple as reading a psalm about provision and thinking, this cannot possibly be all it means, because if this is all it means then it has already been said to me and nothing has changed.

Come and sit at the end of the table with me. There is bread out and the light is good, and I want to walk you to the very last invitation in the whole book.

There Is No Door Behind the Door

There is no code, and the last page has no doorkeeper

Let me say the plain thing first, because the name over this door promises a secret and I will not keep a serious man reading in hope of one.

There is no code. There is no oral key to the harvest laws. There is no second door. The corners left uncut, the wages paid before dark, the debts released in the seventh year, the year of jubilee that hands a field back to the family that lost it, all of it is written out in the open, in the plainest possible language, in a book that was read aloud to entire crowds of farmers who could not read it themselves. It was never designed for insiders. It was designed to be shouted in a field.

And I will honor your seriousness rather than patronize it. You were not wrong to look for depth. There is depth. The laws are stranger and better than most people ever notice, and I have spent my life in them and expect to die still finding things. But depth is not the same as a door, and a text that rewards a lifetime is not a text that requires a password.

Now come with me to the end of the whole Bible, past all the law and all the prophets and all the letters, to the last invitation anybody is given in it.

And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.Revelation 22:17

Look at how many times the door is opened in one sentence. The Spirit says come. The bride says come. Anyone who hears is told to turn round and say come to the next person. Anyone thirsty may come. And then the widest phrase in the book: whosoever will. And the last word, before the warnings and the amen, is freely.

That is where the whole library ends. Not with a qualification. Not with a handover to a trusted few. With a door held open by two hands and a word that means no charge, no condition, no credential.

You are not standing at a second door, and there has never been one behind the first. That is not something I have said to be kind to a man in a cold car park. It is written on the last page of Scripture, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes an ancient closing invitation and lands it on a notebook held against a chest.

You have already been handed everything the passages carry, and the plain reading was never the beginners' reading. Scripture says whosoever will, and His Spirit is the one who makes an open word land as an open door rather than a nice idea.

Now let me name the shape underneath this, since you and I both like to be exact.

The shape did not come from the text. It came from somewhere earlier. Somebody, once, had something and did not share it with you, and you were young enough that the whole world took that shape afterwards. And a mind as careful as yours will always be able to build a case that the shape is out there in the world rather than in here in the memory. Eleven readings of the Torah is not the behavior of a man looking for information. It is the behavior of a man knocking.

You are not outside the room, and the knocking was answered a long time before you started. Scripture says that in Christ you have been brought near by His blood, near being a place and not a mood, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a written word like near and settles a body inside it.

And now what I owe you about your mouth, because a shape that old will not shift because a teacher was warm to you at the end of a table. Jesus said that faith the size of a mustard seed, spoken to a mountain, does what a lifetime of careful reading never does on its own. So speak. You have the standing to tell an old shape what it is not, because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and Scripture calls that your position rather than your scholarship, and the Holy Spirit takes a spoken word further than any car park.

The breakthrough

Something can end tonight, and it is not the study. Keep the shelf. Keep the notebooks and the eleven readings, because they are honest hunger and they have made you the kind of man who can hear this. What can end is the knocking.

You are held by a God whose book ends with an open door and the word freely, and He has never once kept a second door behind the first. That is not a mood I am building at the end of a table. It is written in Revelation 22, and it is the Spirit's own work to take a written invitation and land it in a body that has been standing in a car park in the cold. What He does about your work, your money and the rest of your years is His to decide, and I say so plainly rather than sending you home with a promise nobody gave me. What is not in question is whether the door is open. It is open, and the last word in the sentence is freely.

So drink. Not once you have found the key. Now, with the commentaries still on the shelf where they can do you good.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud with the page open and the pen down. Not because the words are a key and God is a locked thing. Because you are in Christ, and the authority to say what is true over your own house has been given to you, and it does not rise or fall with what you have read. What He does about your work, your money and your remaining years is His to decide, and a good God answers in ways I would never have set down for Him. The Holy Spirit is the one who carries these words further than this room, so let Him.

  1. Shelf of commentaries in my study, you are good honest work and you were never a gate. It is written that whoever wills may take the water of life freely, and the last invitation in the book has no doorkeeper standing on it.
  2. Old shape that keeps me knocking, get out of my house, in the name of Jesus. The Holy Spirit says come, and the Spirit and the bride do not say come to a queue of the qualified.
  3. Lord, You hold that door open with both hands, and the Spirit and the bride both say come, and whoever wills may take the water of life freely. I am not looking for the door behind the door any more, I am drinking.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
