The Pension Letter I Did Not Open

This message is for the man in his fifties with an unopened annual statement in a drawer, who has already worked out that he will be working until the day he dies and has stopped mentioning it to his wife

It comes in April. Same envelope, same window, same slightly cheerful typeface, and it goes in the second drawer down with the others.

There are four in there now. He knows there are four because he counted them in the spring while looking for a fuse.

He is fifty six. He has worked since he was seventeen and there is not one year of that he would call wasted. But there were the two years after the redundancy, and there were the years when the children were small and the money went where money goes, and then there was the stretch where a business took everything he had in it, which is not a story he tells at parties.

So there is a figure, and he has seen it, and he does not need to open a fifth envelope to know roughly what it says.

Here is what he did on a Sunday afternoon about two years ago. He worked it out. Properly, on paper, with a pen, at that table. What is in there, what goes in a month, what it comes to, and what that would give a man a year. And then he sat back and understood something with complete clarity, which was: I will be working until I die.

Not in a dramatic way. He is not ill. He likes his work most weeks. It was simply a fact arriving, the way a tide arrives.

He has never told his wife. He nearly did, twice. What stops him is that she would want to fix it, and there is nothing to fix, and then she would carry it too, and one of them carrying it is enough.

So he takes the envelopes and puts them in the drawer, and every April there is a day where he is a bit quiet, and she thinks it is the anniversary of something.

You know that drawer. Yours might be a statement, or a letter about a shortfall, or a conversation with an adviser in a small room. Somewhere in your fifties an arithmetic was completed, and it did not shout, and it has been running the back of your mind ever since, and you have not said it out loud to the person who sleeps next to you.

Come and sit down. Kettle is on. There is an old story that ends with a group of women saying something over an old woman who had lost everything.

The Pension Letter I Did Not Open

There is no code, and there is a restorer of life

Let me say the plain thing first, because the name over the door of this site promises a secret and I am not going to sit at a table with a man in his fifties and hint at one.

There is no code. There is nothing in Scripture that changes what is in that pot, and I am not going to tell you that God is about to provide for your retirement in some specific way, because I have not been told that and no honest man will tell you he has. Nothing here promises a reversal and nothing here dates one.

Here is what is written. It is the end of the book of Ruth, and it is not about Ruth. It is about Naomi, who went out full and came home empty, whose husband and both sons had died, and who told the whole town to stop calling her by her own name because it meant pleasant and she did not feel it.

And the women said unto Naomi, Blessed be the LORD, which hath not left thee this day without a kinsman, that his name may be famous in Israel. And he shall be unto thee a restorer of thy life, and a nourisher of thine old age.Ruth 4:14-15

Read what they call the child. A restorer of thy life. A nourisher of thine old age.

Now, Naomi had done the arithmetic too. She said it out loud in chapter one, in public, in a way that would embarrass most of us. She had worked out exactly what her old age was going to be, and she was not being dramatic, she was being accurate. Given what she had, her sum was correct.

And her sum was correct and it was not the story. What arrived was not a solution she had modeled. It came through a foreign daughter in law who should statistically have gone home, and a distant relative, and a harvest field, and none of that appeared anywhere in Naomi's calculation because it could not have.

You are not wrong about your figures, and being right about arithmetic is not the same as knowing what your old age will hold. That is not a comfort I have arranged over a kettle. It is written at the end of Ruth, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes the last page of an old story and lays it beside four unopened envelopes in a drawer.

You have a God who is described as a restorer of life and a nourisher of old age, and He has never once been limited to the routes a man can see from his own kitchen table. Scripture gives Him that exact title in that exact context, and His Spirit is the one who makes an ancient description into something a man can lean on at fifty six.

Now let me say the true thing, pastor to man, because I have sat with a lot of men your age on exactly this.

The weight is not the number. It is that you are carrying it alone on purpose, and you have told yourself that is kindness.

It is love, I will grant you that. But there is a cost you have not counted. Your wife knows something is in the drawer. Women always know there is something in the drawer. What she does not know is what, so instead of carrying a fact with you, she is carrying a vague unease on her own, every April, and thinking it is an anniversary.

You have not spared her the weight. You have swapped it for a lighter one that she has to carry blindfolded.

You are not failing your household, and one Sunday afternoon of arithmetic was never a verdict on a man who has worked since he was seventeen. Scripture says that the Lord is thy keeper and thy shade upon thy right hand, which is a description of somebody standing beside you rather than a promise about a balance, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that solid rather than sentimental.

And now what I owe you about your mouth, because two years of a silent sum does not lift because a friend was kind over tea. Jesus said faith the size of a mustard seed, spoken to a mountain, does what carrying on quietly never does. So speak it, out loud, first here and then to her. You have the standing to speak to a forecast and tell it what it is not, because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and Scripture calls that yours by position rather than by provision, and the Holy Spirit takes a spoken word much further than a kitchen.

The breakthrough

Something can change tonight, and it is not the pot. I cannot add to it and I will not sit at your table implying that a good conversation has, or that God has told me He will.

You are held by a God who is called a restorer of life and a nourisher of old age, and He has never once been confined to the routes a man can see from his own table. That is not a mood I am building over a kettle. It is written at the end of Ruth, and it is the Spirit's own work to take an old woman's story and land it in a body that did the arithmetic on a Sunday two years ago. What He does about the money, the work and your seventies is His to decide, and I say that plainly rather than sending you to bed with a promise nobody gave me. What is not in question is whether that sum is a forecast. It is not. It is a sum.

So open the envelope, and then tell her.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud at the table with the envelope open in front of you. Not because the words are a technique and God is a mechanism. Because you are in Christ, and the authority to say what is true over your own house has been given to you, and it does not rise or fall with what is in the statement. What He does about the money, the work and the years is His to decide, and a good Father answers in ways I would never have written for Him. The Holy Spirit is the one who carries these words further than this kitchen, so let Him.

  1. Envelope in the second drawer, you are a statement and you are not a forecast of my life. It is written that God gave a woman a restorer of her life and a nourisher of her old age, and the God who wrote that did not consult her arithmetic first.
  2. Silence I have called kindness, get out of this house, in the name of Jesus. The Holy Spirit says the Lord is my keeper and my shade upon my right hand, and one Sunday of sums was never a verdict on a man who has worked since he was seventeen.
  3. Lord, You are called a restorer of life and a nourisher of old age, and You have never been limited to the routes I can see from this table. God restores what my own arithmetic cannot, and I am telling my wife this week.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
