The Qualification That Does Not Travel

There is a folder. It is green and it has a plastic sleeve at the front and it has been in the bottom of the wardrobe for six years.

Inside it is a certificate with a seal, and a letter of reference from a man who is probably dead by now, and photographs of three jobs he ran, and a page with his name on it and a set of letters after it that mean something entirely specific in the country he comes from and mean nothing whatsoever here.

He has taken that folder to four appointments. The first person was kind and made a phone call in front of him. The second one said the word equivalence eleven times and gave him a leaflet. The third one told him it would be quicker to start again. The fourth one, who was young and did not know she was doing anything, said, and have you got anything from here?

He does not take the folder any more.

He works nights. It is honest and it is fine and the men are all right with him. His wife says he is quieter than he used to be, and he says he is tired, and both of those are true and only one of them is the reason.

Here is the thing he has noticed and never said. He has stopped telling people what he used to be. At the beginning he said it constantly, in that slightly too eager way that new arrivals do, and somewhere in year three he stopped, and now it does not come up at all, and there are men he has worked beside for two years who have no idea.

Not because he is ashamed of the night work. Because saying it out loud invites the face people make, and the face is not unkind, and he cannot take it any more.

You know that folder. Yours might be a trade, or a degree, or a business that was yours in a place you had to leave. Or it might be years out for children, or an illness that took a decade. There is a version of you that had a name for what it did, and the paperwork of your current life has no field for it.

Come and sit down. Pull the chairs round. There is one sentence in the jubilee law that was shouted rather than filed.

There is no code, and there is a proclamation

Let me say the plain thing first, because the name over the door of this site promises a secret and I am not going to keep a man who works nights reading in hope of one.

There is no code. There is nothing in Scripture that gets a qualification recognized, and I am not going to tell you that God is about to open a door in a licensing office, because I have not been told that and nobody who respects you will tell you they have. Nothing here promises anything about paperwork.

Here is what is written, and notice that it is not administrative at all.

And ye shall hallow the fiftieth year, and proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof: it shall be a jubile unto you; and ye shall return every man unto his possession, and ye shall return every man unto his family.Leviticus 25:10

It is proclaimed. Out loud. With a horn, across a whole country, to all the inhabitants, which is a phrase that deliberately does not sort people by category.

And what it announces is a return. Every man to his possession and every man to his family. Not a review process. Not a scheme with an application window. A shout that says the arrangement everyone has been living under is over, and it is over today, and it is over for everybody who can hear it.

Now, that was a law about land in an ancient economy and I am not going to pretend it is a promise about your certificates. What it tells you is the disposition of God toward people who have been pushed down a level by circumstances they did not choose. He does not process them. He announces over them.

You are not a case awaiting assessment, and God has never once required paperwork before He would announce anything over you. That is not a comfort I have arranged around a table. It is written in Leviticus 25, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a proclamation made across a whole land and lays it on a man with a green folder in the bottom of a wardrobe.

You have a God who proclaims rather than assesses, and He has never sorted His people by what a country recognizes. Scripture says unto all the inhabitants thereof, which is God deliberately refusing a category, and His Spirit is the one who makes an old shout land in a body that has stopped saying what it used to be.

Now let me name the real loss, because it is not the salary.

You stopped saying it. That is the thing. Somewhere in year three you decided that the sentence I was a such and such was more trouble than it was worth, and you put it away, and putting it away has cost you more than any of the four appointments did. Because a man who cannot say what he is trained to be starts, slowly, to become somebody who was never trained to be anything.

Your wife hears it as quiet. It is not quiet. It is a man with a whole sentence he no longer says.

You are not less than what you were trained to be, and no office in any country has authority over what you are. Scripture says God is the one who gives skill and understanding, and that He gave it to workmen by name, which means the training in your hands came from Him and did not come from a certificate, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes that and puts a man's shoulders back.

And now what I owe you about your mouth, because six years of not saying it does not end because friends were warm to you at a table. Jesus said faith the size of a mustard seed, spoken to a mountain, does what enduring never does. So speak, out loud, in this room. You have the standing to speak to a thing that has been shrinking you and tell it what it is not, because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and Scripture calls that yours by position rather than by recognition, and the Holy Spirit takes a spoken word much further than a community hall.
