The Word Declined

She gets to about the fourth box before it starts.

Name. Address. How long at this address. And then the one about previous, and by then she can hear it, before there is anything on the screen to hear, in the flat little voice a machine would use if machines had voices.

Declined.

She has heard it out loud four times. In a shop, once, with a queue behind her, which she does not talk about. On a phone, twice, from women who were both perfectly nice. And once in an email that took eleven days to arrive and had a paragraph in it about her circumstances.

The bankruptcy was six years ago and there is not one thing about it she would defend and not one thing she would hide. A business that went, and a partner who left the country, and a period of about nine months where she signed things she should not have signed because signing them was the only way anybody would keep the doors open.

She has worked ever since. She has never missed a rent payment in five years. She runs a team of nine people and two of them have said she is the best manager they have ever had.

And she has stopped applying for things.

Not decided. Stopped. There is a difference and she noticed it in the spring, when she got to box four on a form for a flat that was actually right, a real one, one she could afford, and she closed the laptop and made herself a coffee and did not go back to it, and told her sister it had gone.

You know that form. Yours might be a job you did not apply for, a course you looked at twice, a phone contract you get somebody else to take out. There is a fact about your past sitting in a database, and somewhere along the way it stopped being a fact and started being a voice, and the voice now gets there before anybody else does.

Sit down here with me. Let me get you something. And then I am going to read you a psalm written by somebody who had been all the way down.

There is no code, and there is a bringing up again

Let me say the plain thing first, because the name over the door of this site promises a secret and I am not standing in front of a woman with your six years and dangling one.

There is no code. There is nothing in Scripture that clears a credit file, and I am not going to tell you that God is about to change what a company sees when they search your name, because I have not been told that and nobody who respects you will say they have. Nothing here promises a reversal and nothing here dates one.

Here is what is actually written. An old man is praying, and he is not being poetic about hardship, he has been through the sort of trouble that takes a life apart.

Thou, which hast shewed me great and sore troubles, shalt quicken me again, and shalt bring me up again from the depths of the earth. Thou shalt increase my greatness, and comfort me on every side.Psalm 71:20-21

Look at the word again. It is in there twice. Quicken me again. Bring me up again. He is not asking for a life that never went down. He is standing in the aftermath of a descent that really happened, and he is speaking to a God whose particular specialty is the again.

And look who he says put him there. Thou, which hast shewed me great and sore troubles. He does not tidy God out of the story. He does not pretend the depths were an accident. He holds the whole thing in one sentence and then asks the same God to bring him up, because that is what he knows about Him.

You are not being asked to pretend the six years did not happen, and God has never once required a clean history before He would speak over somebody. That is not a comfort I have arranged in a church hall. It is written into Psalm 71, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes an old man's prayer out of the depths and lays it on a woman at box four.

You have a God whose signature move is the again, and He has never once read you off a screen. Scripture says bring me up again from the depths of the earth, which is a phrase about the lowest place there is, and His Spirit is the one who makes an ancient prayer into a thing a woman can stand on this evening.

Now let me name the exact thing, because I have watched capable women get taken apart by this one.

The word has changed jobs. It started as a fact about an application. Now it arrives before the application, and it is not describing a decision any more, it is describing you. That is the shift, and it happened quietly, and it is why you closed the laptop in the spring on a flat you could actually afford.

And here is the part that costs the most: you told your sister it had gone. You are a woman who runs nine people and you could not say out loud to your own sister that you had stopped at box four.

You are not what a search returns, and no database has ever been given authority to name you. Scripture says He has called you by name and that you are His, and calling by name is precisely what a file cannot do, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes that written line and puts it where the flat voice has been sitting.

And now what I owe you about your mouth, because six years of that word does not stop because somebody was warm to you over tea. Jesus said faith the size of a mustard seed, spoken to a mountain, does what enduring never does. So open your mouth, out loud, here. You have the standing to speak to a word that has been running ahead of you and tell it what it is not, because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and Scripture calls that yours by position rather than by record, and the Holy Spirit takes a spoken word much further than a hall.
