He could go the other way. There is a road that comes out by the school and adds about six minutes, and for a while he took it, and then he stopped taking it, because taking it felt like something worse than walking past.
So he walks past.
The sign is different now. Better, if he is honest, done properly by somebody who knew what they were doing. They have moved the door. They have put a bench outside in the summer, which he thought about for years and never did.
His father had that shop for twenty nine years. His grandfather had the stall before it. There is a photograph at home of three men outside that door with their arms folded, and he is the small boy at the front in the photograph, and the whole point of the small boy at the front is that he is next.
It went in the way these things go. Not one disaster. A road closed for eleven months. Then a chain opened at the other end. Then the year everybody remembers, and a lease that came up at exactly the wrong moment, and by the end he was making decisions between bad options at two in the morning, and there was a day in February when he signed something and went and sat in his car.
He has work now. Steady, all right, nothing wrong with it.
And what he cannot put down is this: his children start lower than he started. That is his sentence and he has said it in his head a thousand times. My father handed me something and I did not hand it on. They begin beneath the line.
You know that street. Yours might be a house that went, or a business, or a qualification you never finished. And underneath it there is a sentence about the next generation, which is a very heavy thing for one man to carry on his own on the way to work.
Walk with me a minute. There is bread at the end of the row and the light is good, and I want to show you what the jubilee actually did with a man in your exact position.

There is no code, and there is a returning
Let me say the plain thing first, because the name over the door of this site promises a secret and I will not walk beside a man carrying that sentence and dangle one.
There is no code. There is nothing in Scripture that gets a shop back, and I am not going to tell you that God is about to restore your business, because I have not been told that and nobody honest will tell you they have. Nothing here promises a reversal and nothing here puts a date on anything.
What is written is stranger, and it was law rather than encouragement.
In Israel, land could be lost. Not permanently, but really, and a family could go down. A man could sell the field and then sell himself into service, and this is what the law said had to happen to him.
And then shall he depart from thee, both he and his children with him, and shall return unto his own family, and unto the possession of his fathers shall he return.Leviticus 25:41
Read who goes with him. Both he and his children with him. God legislates the children into the sentence, because He knows exactly what you are carrying: a man in that position is not primarily grieving a field, he is grieving what he has done to the people who come after him.
And read what he returns to. The possession of his fathers. Not something equivalent. Not a fresh start somewhere else with a state grant. The actual ground his family came from, because in that economy the land was not an asset, it was the family's standing, and God had assigned it in the first place.
So the whole system was built on one conviction: the ground was never really the market's to keep, and a man's descent was never allowed to become his family's permanent floor.
You have not fixed a floor under your children, and no signature in February had the authority to assign your family's ground. That is not a comfort I am offering on a street. It is written into Leviticus 25, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a law about returning families and lays it beside a man walking past a shop with a bench outside it.
You have a God who assigns the ground, and He has never once let a market have the last word about a family's standing. Scripture says the earth is the Lord's and the fulness thereof, and His Spirit is the one who makes an ancient conviction land in the chest of a man on his way to work.
Now let me say the honest thing, because you would hear it if I went round it.
The photograph is the wound. Three men outside a door with their arms folded and a small boy at the front. You have not been able to look at it properly in four years, and the reason is not that you lost a business. It is that you feel you broke a line, and a broken line feels like a thing done to people who did not choose it.
But look at what is actually in that photograph. Three men who each got the shop in a different decade, in different conditions, none of which they controlled. Your grandfather did not build that stall out of nothing because he was better than you. He built it in a decade that allowed it. Your father held it for twenty nine years across conditions nobody would design.
And the small boy at the front is not in the photograph because of what he would own. He is in it because he is theirs.
You are not a broken link, and belonging to that family was never conditional on holding the lease. Scripture says that God setteth the solitary in families, and that He determines the times before appointed and the bounds of our habitation, which is a plain statement that the decade a man is born into is not his own doing, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes that and lifts a specific weight off a specific man.
And now what I owe you about your mouth, because a sentence four years old does not lift because a friend walked with you. Jesus said faith the size of a mustard seed, spoken to a mountain, does what carrying it never does. So speak, out loud, on your own street. You have the standing to speak to a sentence about your family and tell it what it is not, because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and Scripture calls that yours by position rather than by inheritance, and the Holy Spirit takes a spoken word much further than a row of shops.
Something can lift today, and it is not the lease. I cannot get you that door back and I will not walk down this street implying that a conversation has, or that God has told me He will.
You are held by a God who wrote a whole law so that a man's descent could not become his family's permanent floor, and He has never once let a bad February assign the ground. That is not a mood I am building at a market. It is written in Leviticus 25, and it is the Spirit's own work to make an old statute land in a body that goes past that shop twice a day. What He does about your work, your children and the years is His to decide, and I say it plainly rather than sending you off with a promise nobody gave me. What is not in question is whether you have sentenced your children. You have not. That was never yours to do.
So walk past it with your head up, and look at the bench, and think what you like about it.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud on your own, at home, with the page written. Not because the words are a technique and God is a mechanism. Because you are in Christ, and the authority to say what is true over your own house has been given to you, and it does not rise or fall with what is over that door. What He does about your work, your children and the years is His to decide, and a good Provider answers in ways I would never have written for Him. The Holy Spirit is the one who carries these words further than this street, so let Him.
- Name over that door, you are somebody else's now and you are not my family's future. It is written that a man returns to his own family and to the possession of his fathers, and the God who wrote that assigns the ground Himself.
- Sentence that I moved my children down a line, get out of my head, in the name of Jesus. The Holy Spirit says God sets the solitary in families and determines the times and the bounds, and no decade was ever mine to arrange.
- Lord, You wrote a law so that a man's worst year could not become his family's floor, and You have never let a market speak last about anybody's standing. God restores what my own arithmetic cannot, and my children are not standing beneath any line tonight.
