It is not a big dent. That is the thing that has made it worse rather than better.
It happened reversing, in the dark, at a place with a low concrete post that he did not see and would not have seen. There was the noise, and the eleven seconds where you sit still with your hands on the wheel, and then he got out and looked at it with his phone torch and thought: that is not too bad.
He brought the truck back that evening and parked it in his neighbor's drive the way he always does, except not the way he always does. He put it in nose first instead of backing it in, so that the tailgate faces the fence.
That was in March.
His neighbor is a decent man who lends that truck to half the street and always has. He has never mentioned it. It is entirely possible he has not noticed, though it is more likely he has, because a man who lends a truck knows his own tailgate. And either way there has now been five months of good mornings across that fence, and the good mornings have got very slightly shorter, and it is not the neighbor who has been shortening them.
He has been going out to his own bins at different times. He noticed that in June.
You know that fence. Yours might be a borrowed dish that got chipped, or a book with a coffee ring on page forty, or a set of tools that went back with one missing. The thing itself is small and could have been fixed with one sentence in the first week, and now the sentence has five months attached to it and it weighs about nine times what the dent weighs.
Come and sit on the wall in the good light. I want to say something about a very old law and then something honest about you and me.

There is no code, and there is a making good
Let me say the plain thing first, because the name over the door of this site promises a secret and a man who has been avoiding his own bins does not need a hint of one.
There is no code. There is nothing in Scripture that makes a dent go away, and nothing that turns honesty into a lever for getting something you want. These old laws cost the man who keeps them and promise him nothing at all, and that is precisely why they are trustworthy.
Here is the one, and it is short and unromantic.
And if a man borrow ought of his neighbour, and it be hurt, or die, the owner thereof being not with it, he shall surely make it good.Exodus 22:14
Notice how ordinary God is about this. There is no lecture. There is no discussion of motive. There is no distinction between a man who was careless and a man who was unlucky. Something was borrowed, something got hurt while the owner was not there, and the borrower makes it good. It is handled the way you handle weather.
That is the mercy in it, and most people miss it. God does not treat a dent as a moral event. He treats it as a thing that gets made good. The whole weight of it, in the law, is on the repair rather than on the man.
You are not standing in front of a moral event, and nothing here makes one bad reverse into a statement about your character. That is not me being kind to you on a wall. It is what the written law actually does, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a plain old rule about borrowed property and lays it across a fence line in August.
You have a God who deals with this in one clause and then moves on, and He has never once made a small thing into a large one. Scripture says he shall surely make it good, which is a sentence about an action rather than about a soul, and His Spirit is the one who takes an unglamorous line and makes it a door a man can walk through.
Now let me name the wound, because it is not about a truck and we both know it.
Somewhere back down the line you learned that damage gets you a certain kind of look. Maybe from a father, maybe from a teacher, maybe from a whole way of being talked to when you were small. And that look is what you have been avoiding for five months. Not the cost of a panel. The face you expect a man to make when you tell him you have hurt something of his.
So you parked it nose first, and that took about four seconds, and it has cost you five months of your own driveway.
You are not a man who breaks things and hides, and one reverse in the dark is not the beginning of a pattern. Scripture says that the Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy, and He is the one whose face has been over you the whole five months, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that written face real enough to walk toward.
And now what I owe you about your mouth, because a fence does not change because a man had a good think on a wall. Jesus said faith the size of a mustard seed, spoken to a mountain, does what putting up with it never does. So speak, out loud, before you go over. You have the standing to tell an old expectation what it is not, because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and Scripture calls that yours by position rather than by conduct, and the Holy Spirit takes a spoken word much further than a fence line.
Something can end today, and it is not the repair. The panel is what it is and it will cost what it costs, and I am not going to sit here implying that a warm hour has fixed anything metal.
You are held by a God who wrote the making good into one plain clause and put no shame anywhere in it, and He has never once looked at you the way you have been bracing for. That is not a mood I am building in good light. It is written in Exodus 22, and it is the Spirit's own work to take an unglamorous old rule and land it in a body that has been timing its own bins since June. What He does about the money and the panel and the summer is His to decide, and I say so plainly rather than sending you in with a promise nobody gave me. What is not in question is whether it can be said today. It can, and it takes about eleven seconds, which is the same length as the silence you sat in with your hands on the wheel.
So go over the fence. Now, while the light is still good.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud on your own side of the fence before you go over. Not because the words are a lever and God is a mechanism. Because you are in Christ, and the authority to say what is true over your own life has been given to you, and it does not rise or fall with how he takes it. What He does about the cost and the panel is His to decide, and a good God answers in ways I would never have written for Him. The Holy Spirit is the one who carries these words further than a driveway, so let Him.
- Dent in a borrowed tailgate, you are one bad reverse and you are not who I am. It is written that a man makes good what was hurt in his hands, and the God who wrote that put no shame in the making good.
- Look I have been bracing for since I was small, get off me, in the name of Jesus. The Holy Spirit shows me a God merciful and gracious and slow to anger, and that is the face that has been over me for five months.
- Lord, You handled this in one plain clause and You never turned a small thing into a large one. What I owe I do not hold overnight, and I am walking across that fence while the light is still good.
