The Sheaf You Do Not Go Back For

This message is for the mother unpacking the week's shopping onto the counter with every item already assigned to a day, who snapped at her son for eating Friday's yoghurt and now stands there with her hands closed around a life that has no edge left in it

The shopping goes onto the counter in the order it will be eaten. That is not a system she chose. It is what her hands do now. The loaf is Monday and Tuesday. The eggs are Thursday, because Thursday is the late night. The four yoghurts are the four school mornings, and the fifth one, the one with the red lid, is Friday, because Friday needs a small kindness to get through.

Her son comes in from the garden with the dog behind him, reaches past her, and eats the red one standing up, in about four spoonfuls, talking the whole time about a goal he nearly scored. And she hears her own voice go sharp before she has decided anything. That was Friday's. He stops chewing. He is fifteen and he says sorry the way fifteen says sorry, and takes the dog upstairs, and the kitchen is very quiet.

She stands there with the receipt in one hand. It is a yoghurt. She knows it is a yoghurt. But it was a yoghurt with a job, and everything on that counter has a job, and everything in the account has a job, and there is not one thing in her life this month that is not already spoken for. That is what the sharpness was. Not the boy. The fist. She has been holding the whole month in a closed hand for so long that when a fifteen year old reached in for a spoonful, the hand did what a fist does.

You know that counter. Maybe your row is a shift pattern, or a diary with no white in it, or a bank app you check on the landing before you go down in the morning. Everything counted, everything assigned. And somewhere in you there is a grief about it that you would not know how to say to anybody, because it sounds ungrateful and it is not. It is the ache of a hand that has forgotten how to be anything but closed. I know that hand from the inside. I would like to sit at your counter for a minute before we open it.

The Sheaf You Do Not Go Back For

There is no code, and there is a corner

Let me say the plain thing first, because the name over the door of this place promises something and I am not going to trade on it. There is no code. Scripture does not hide a technique for money behind a Hebrew word and wait for the clever to find it. If you came here for that, it was not foolishness, it was tiredness, and I am not going to make you feel small for it. But I am also not going to pretend to hand you what does not exist.

What Scripture actually carries about money is older and stranger than a secret. It is a farmer with a field, told by God to leave the corner standing. It is a man reaping his barley, who forgets a sheaf in the far row and is told: do not go back for it.

When you reap your harvest in your field and forget a sheaf in the field, you shall not go back to get it. It shall be for the sojourner, the fatherless, and the widow.Deuteronomy 24:19

Read what that does to a field. The whole of it is his. He plowed it, he sowed it, he counted on it, and every row of it is spoken for. And God does not tell him to give a portion. He tells him to leave an edge uncut, and to let one sheaf go where it fell. Not a percentage. Not a plan. A corner of the counted thing that is not counted, and a hand that stops at the boundary of the field and does not go back.

I want to be careful here, because there is a version of this that becomes another job for your closed hand, and it is not that. The uncut corner is not a lever. God did not tell the farmer that if he left the corner he would get a better harvest. He told him whose the corner was. That is all. The edge belonged to somebody the farmer would never meet, and the farmer's only part was to not close his hand over it.

You were never asked to hold your whole life shut, and you are not the one who measures your field. I am not saying that as a comfort I made up. It is written into the law of the harvest, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a farmer's boundary and lays it gently over a kitchen counter.

Here is the pit, named plainly. The closed hand is not greed. In you it is fear, and it is tiredness, and it is love that has been made to do arithmetic for too long. When the boy reached past you, the fist did not close because you begrudge him a yoghurt. It closed because there is no slack anywhere and your body knows it. So I am not going to tell you to give more. I am going to tell you something smaller and stranger: that one edge of the counted thing was never yours to count.

You have a Provider whose hand is open, and His open hand is where your closed one learns. Scripture says He opens His hand and satisfies the desire of every living thing, and the Spirit who wrote that line into a psalm is the same Spirit who is in your kitchen right now, not to audit the counter, but to loosen the fingers.

Look at what the farmer was and was not promised. He was not promised the corner would come back to him. He was not told the sojourner would thank him. He was told God saw the corner. And the sheaf he forgot, God did not call a loss. He called it somebody else's supper. So the man walked home lighter by one sheaf, and lighter by one thing he did not have to keep hold of, and that second lightness is the one I want for you.

You are not behind on a rule here, and no lack in your house is a verdict on you. Nothing in the written law of gleaning makes the poor man's small field less holy than the rich man's wide one, and the Spirit does not measure the size of the corner. He looks at the hand.

And now the part I owe you about your mouth, because the counter does not change by you thinking harder about it. Jesus said that a person with faith no bigger than a grain of pepper on that counter can speak to a mountain and see it move. Speak to it. Not think about it, not privately hope, not add it to the list. You have the standing to speak to a closed fist and tell it what it is not, because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and Scripture calls you His, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries what you say further than the sound of your own voice in a quiet kitchen.

The breakthrough

Something can loosen in your hands in the next minute, and it is not the account. I cannot open the account, and I will not pretend to. It is the fist.

You are held by a God who measures the field, and the whole of it was never yours to hold shut. That is not a feeling I am asking you to work up over the receipt. It is written in the harvest law, and it is the Spirit's work to make a written thing land in a body. What He does with your month is His to decide, and I say that plainly rather than leaving you to hope I meant something bigger. What I can say without any hedge is that one edge of your counted life is His corner, and letting it stand is not a loss. It is the sheaf you do not go back for.

So open the hand. Not wide. Just at the edge, where the wire is low.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, standing at the counter with the receipt if that is where you are. Not because the words are a bargain and God is a till. Because you are in Christ, and the standing to name what is true over your own hands has been given to you, and it does not depend on how the month ends. What He does with the account, with the shifts, with the fifteen year old, is His to decide, and a good Provider is allowed to answer in ways I would not have written down. What is not up for decision is whose the corner is. The Holy Spirit is the one who carries these words further than your voice, so let Him.

  1. Counter full of the week, you were counted and you were spoken for, and one edge of you is not mine to close around. It is written that the corner of the field is left standing, and the One who wrote that is the one who measures my field.
  2. Fist that closed on a boy over a yoghurt, open, in the name of Jesus. The Spirit who wrote the harvest law is loosening my fingers, and I do not go back for the sheaf.
  3. Lord, You open Your hand and satisfy every living thing, as it is written, and I am one of them, and so is somebody I will never meet. I hold this open at the edge, and You are the one who measures.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
