The Hour I Never Learned to Not Bill

The sheet lives on the dash of the truck, held down by a spanner, and he fills it in at the end of every job with the engine still running.

Quarter hours. That is the unit. He learned it off a man named Royce who told him when he was twenty three that a man who does not count his time will get eaten, and Royce was right, and it took him eleven years and one very bad autumn to believe him all the way down.

He is forty six now. He has a truck that is paid for and a name people pass on. He has not had a job go bad in six years.

And in April he mended a mower for the woman two doors up, and it took twenty minutes and a part he already had in the box, and he wrote it on the sheet. Twenty minutes and the part. He put the bill in her door in an envelope.

She paid it. She paid it that same afternoon, in cash, in the same envelope, and she wrote thank you on the back, and she has waved at him every day since exactly the same as she always did.

And something in him has not sat right from that day to this.

He has tried to reason with it. That is my trade. If I do it free for one I do it free for all. She would not want charity. All of that is true and none of it touches the thing, because the thing is not about the twenty minutes. The thing is that he stood in her drive with a mower going and his hand already reaching for the sheet, and there was no part of him that even considered not writing it down. That is what he keeps coming back to. Not what he did. What was not in him.

You know that sheet. Yours may be a phone that tracks your steps and your hours. It may be a mental tally of who owes you a favor. It may be that everything in your life has a price on it now, including the things that never used to, and you did not decide that, it happened over years while you were being responsible.

Come sit on the tailgate a while. The light is good. I want to tell you about a whole year when the ground was told to do nothing at all.

There is no code, and there is a year the ground lies still

Let me say the plain thing first, because the name over the door of this place promises a secret and I am not going to hold a working man with a hint of one.

There is no code. There is nothing you can do with an hour that unlocks money. There is no arrangement of Scripture that makes a trade go better, and any man who tells you there is has turned God into a slot machine with a Bible verse painted on the side. I have worked with my hands and I have read this book a long while, and it does not do that.

What it does do is stranger. God gave a nation of farmers a law about their own ground, and the law was this.

And six years thou shalt sow thy land, and shalt gather in the fruits thereof: But the seventh year thou shalt let it rest and lie still; that the poor of thy people may eat: and what they leave the beasts of the field shall eat.Exodus 23:10-11

Sit with what that is. It is not a tax. Nobody comes and collects. It is not charity either, because there is no giver and no receiver in it, there is only a field that has been told to stop producing for its owner, and people walking onto it and eating.

And read the last line, because it is the one that gets me every time. What they leave, the animals eat. So it is not even a system for feeding the poor efficiently. It is a year of a man's own ground being nobody's. Some of it goes to the hungry and the rest of it goes to the deer, and God writes that down as though it were the most sensible thing in the world.

You were never meant to work every square foot of your own life, and there is a part of it that was never yours to harvest. That is not a soft thing I am saying to you on a tailgate. It is written into the law given at the mountain, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a rule about barley ground and lays it across a clipboard on a dashboard.

You have a God who keeps His own books, and He has never once asked you to be the one counting. Scripture says the earth is the Lord's and the fulness thereof, and His Spirit is the one who takes a written line like that and eases a grip that has been closed since a bad autumn.

Now let me say the honest part, because you would smell it a mile off if I dressed it up.

Royce was right. He was right in the way that a man on a hard road is right, and you needed him, and the counting saved you. But what saves a man at twenty three can start running him at forty six, and the thing you have been sitting with since April is not guilt about an envelope. It is grief. You have noticed that there is now nothing in your week that is not for something. Not one hour of it is loose. And a man who has no loose hours has, without ever deciding to, stopped being able to be surprised by anybody.

You are not a hard man, and the counting was never a sin to be repented of. Scripture does not shame the careful, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can loosen a hand without ever telling it that it was wrong to have closed.

And now what I owe you about your mouth, because a sheet on a dashboard does not change because a man had a good think about it. Jesus said faith the size of a mustard seed, spoken to a mountain, does what quiet enduring never does. So say it out loud, in the truck, where nobody is listening. You have the standing to speak to a hardness in your own life and tell it what it is not, because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and Scripture calls that yours by position and not by trade, and the Holy Spirit takes a spoken word a long way past a driveway.
