Daily BreadPsalm 78:24-25

The One Who Eats Last

This message is for the man who feeds a full table every night and eats standing at the counter afterwards, who has fed everyone for so long that he no longer knows how to receive a plate from anybody

There are nine at that table most nights and he could tell you what each of them will eat.

He knows the one who will not have onion. He knows which of the little ones will need it cut up and which will be insulted if it is. He knows his mother in law takes hers early because of her tablets. He has been doing this for a long time and he is very good at it, and there is a real pleasure in it that is not false and not martyrdom.

And he eats standing at the counter afterwards, out of whatever is left in the pan, usually while washing something.

Nobody made that happen. It began as practical. There was a stretch when the children were small and somebody had to be up and moving, and it made sense, and then the children stopped being small and the arrangement stayed.

Last month his daughter, who is nineteen and does not miss anything, made him up a plate and put it at a place at the table and pulled the chair out.

And he could not do it.

He laughed. He said he would in a minute. He carried on doing the thing with the pans, and about ten minutes later the plate was cold and she had gone back to her food and he had won, and he stood at the counter feeling something that was not victory.

He does not know how to be handed a plate. That is the plain fact of it. Somewhere in fifteen years of feeding people he has lost the ability to be fed by them, and he did not notice it happening, and he is not sure it can be got back.

You know that counter. Yours might be the tea nobody makes for you, or the lift you always give and never take, or the way you go quiet when somebody asks what you need. And you would tell anybody that you are fine, and mostly you are, and there is a thing that has quietly gone out of you and nobody can see it because everybody is being fed.

Come and sit down here, by the water, while the light is good. There is a line in a psalm about how God fed a crowd, and I want you to hear how far it goes.

The One Who Eats Last

There is no code, and there is a full measure

Let me say the plain thing first, because the name over the door of this site promises a secret and a man who feeds nine people every night does not need one more thing to manage.

There is no code. There is nothing in Scripture that fills a pan by a formula, and nothing here is a technique. And I will say the second thing carefully: if there is genuinely not enough food in your house tonight, this article is not telling you to be at peace about that, and Scripture does not either. This is for the man who has today and cannot receive it.

Here is the psalm looking back at the desert years.

And had rained down manna upon them to eat, and had given them of the corn of heaven. Man did eat angels' food: he sent them meat to the full.Psalm 78:24-25

To the full. That is the phrase.

He did not send them enough to get by. The psalmist, looking back on a nation of former slaves in a wilderness with no agriculture, does not describe a survival ration. He says to the full, and he calls it the corn of heaven, and he uses a phrase about angels' food, which is poetry doing what poetry does, which is insisting that this was not scraps.

And every single person in that camp received it. The ones who organized it. The ones who carried it. The elders who went out first to make sure it was there for everybody else. Nobody in that desert was fed by their own arranging, and nobody was left out for being the one who arranged.

You are not outside the supply, and God has never once fed a household through a man and forgotten the man. That is not a comfort I have arranged by the water. It is written into Psalm 78, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a line about a whole camp being fed to the full and lays it beside a man eating out of a pan at a counter.

You have today, and today is met, and the measure was never a survival ration. Scripture says to the full, and His Spirit is the one who takes a phrase like that and makes it apply to the person who has been serving rather than only to the people served.

Now let me name the wound, because you would know if I skipped it.

Feeding people is not the problem. It is one of the best things about your life and the table is proof of it.

What has happened is narrower and it is real. Somewhere in fifteen years, being the one who provides became the only position you know how to hold, and receiving became a thing that happens to other people. And when your daughter pulled that chair out last month, what you felt was not modesty. It was something closer to threat, because sitting down in that chair would mean being, for ten minutes, a man who needs something, and you have not been that man in front of anybody in a very long time.

That is not strength. It looks exactly like strength from the outside, which is why nobody has ever said anything.

You are not diminished by being handed something, and the ability to receive is not weakness in a man who provides. Scripture says that Jesus, who fed thousands, let a woman anoint His feet and let others minister to Him of their substance, which is the strongest man in the story receiving in public, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that permission real rather than theoretical.

And now what I owe you about your mouth, because fifteen years does not turn round because a friend was decent to you by the water. Jesus said faith the size of a mustard seed, spoken to a mountain, does what carrying on never does. So speak, out loud, here. You have the standing to speak to a habit and tell it what it is not, because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and Scripture calls that yours by position rather than by service, and the Holy Spirit takes a spoken word further out than the water.

The breakthrough

Something can change tonight, and it is not the cooking. You will cook tomorrow and it will be good and everybody will eat, and I am not sitting here suggesting anything else.

You are held by a God who fed a whole camp to the full and never once left out the ones doing the carrying, and He has never been served by anybody who was not also fed. That is not a mood I am building in good light. It is written in Psalm 78, and it is the Spirit's own work to take an old line and land it in a body that eats standing at a counter. What He does about the money, the household and the years is His to decide, and I say so plainly rather than sending you home with a promise nobody gave me. What is not in question is whether you are in the supply. You are, and you always were, and you have been standing up to eat it.

So sit down. That is the whole thing. Sit down.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud at the table with the plate in your hands. Not because the words are a technique and God is a mechanism. Because you are in Christ, and the authority to say what is true over your own house has been given to you, and it does not rise or fall with what you have provided. What He does about the money and the household is His to decide, and a good Provider answers in ways I would never have written for Him. The Holy Spirit is the one who carries these words further than this table, so let Him.

  1. Counter where I eat standing up, you are a habit and you are not my place. It is written that God sent them meat to the full and gave them the corn of heaven, and the God who did that never fed a crowd and left one man out.
  2. Idea that being handed something makes me less, get off me, in the name of Jesus. The Holy Spirit shows me the One who fed thousands letting others minister to Him, and receiving was never weakness in a man who provides.
  3. Lord, You fed a whole camp to the full and You never once forgot the ones doing the carrying. Today is measured and today is met, and I am sitting down at my own table tonight.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
