The Dryer With the Cracked Door

This message is for the young mother in the launderette on a Thursday evening with a week of clean washing folded on the table and the fridge at home full to Sunday, who is doing the count in her head anyway and cannot feel that today is met

The dryers give off the only warmth in the place, and she is standing in front of hers with both hands flat on the glass, watching the towels go round.

It is the one with the cracked door, third from the end, because it runs hotter than the others and she learned that the first winter. Her boy is riding the wire trolley up and down between the machines and the woman at the far end, who is always there on a Thursday, has stopped telling him off and started timing him. There is a radio somewhere behind the counter, and the smell is the smell of every launderette there has ever been, hot lint and somebody else's fabric softener.

The washing is done. A whole week of it, school jumpers and work shirts and the good tea towels, and in a minute it will be dry and she will fold it on the long table in the order it goes into the drawers. The rent went out on Monday and it cleared. The fridge at home is full to Sunday; she did the shop yesterday and she did it properly. Nobody is going hungry in her house tonight, or tomorrow, or the day after that.

And she is counting.

She does not decide to. It starts on its own, on a Thursday, the way a knee aches before rain. What is left, what comes in, what goes out before it comes in, and whether the gap between those two things is the size it was last week or a little bigger. She has done the sum so many times she can do it with the towels going round in front of her eyes. It never comes out different. It never comes out wrong, either. That is the strange part. She is fed, and housed, and the drawers will be full tonight, and she is standing in a warm launderette with her hands on the glass, counting as though she were not.

You know that count. Maybe yours starts on a Wednesday, or on the drive home, or the moment the payslip lands. You have today. You know you have today. And some part of you refuses to sit down inside it, because it is already standing at the edge of the week, looking at Thursday, doing the sum. I am not going to tell you the count is silly. I want to tell you what it is made of, and then I want to hand you something you can actually hold.

The Dryer With the Cracked Door

There is no code, and there is bread

Let me say the plainest thing first, because you may have found this site by typing a question with a Hebrew word in it. There is no code. Scripture does not hide a technique about money and there is no arrangement of ancient words that turns a Thursday into a Friday. If you went looking for one, that is not foolish; the month is longer than the money for a great many people, and looking for a way through is what a sensible person does. But I would be lying to you if I let you read another paragraph still expecting the trick. There is none. What there is, is older and stranger than a trick, and it fits in two hands.

Before I get to it I want to say something to a different reader, so that nobody mistakes who this is for. If you are reading this in real shortage, if the fridge is not full and the rent did not clear, this article is not telling you to be content with that. Real lack is real, God does not call it holy, and it is answered elsewhere and by other means than a page. What I am writing here is for the person who has today's provision in the house and cannot feel it. That is its own ache, and it is the one I want to sit with.

So here is the pit, named. The trouble is not shortage. It is a tiredness that has nothing to do with the sum coming out wrong, because it does not. It is the tiredness of a person who lives at the end of the week instead of in the middle of the day. Every Thursday you leave the day under your feet, walk to the edge of the month, and lean over it. The count is not information. You already have the information. The count is a place you go, and it is cold there, and you keep going.

Now the older, stranger thing.

An omer a head

When the bread came down in the wilderness, it came with a measure. Gather it, God said, each one according to what he eats, an omer a head, for the people in your tent. And they went out and gathered, some more and some less, the way people do. Then they measured it, and the text records something that ought to stop you where you stand.

And when they measured it with an omer, whoever gathered much had nothing left over, and whoever gathered little had no lack. Each of them gathered as much as he could eat.Exodus 16:18

The one who gathered much had nothing over. The one who gathered little had no lack. That is not a sum. It is the opposite of a sum. It is a day, measured by God, that came out level for the person who scrambled and the person who did not, because the measure was never in the gathering. It was in the giving.

You have today's portion, and it was measured for you by the same hand that measured the manna. I am not putting my own hope over your evening. Exodus 16 says the measure was His and not theirs, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a line about a wilderness three and a half thousand years old and lays it across a launderette table.

And then the next thing, which is where the count comes in. Moses told them, let no one leave any of it until morning. Some of them did. Some of them, with the bread of God in their hands, could not stop themselves keeping a little back for a day that had not come. And in the morning it bred worms and it stank. That is not God being unkind. It is God showing them what a day's bread does when you make it carry two days. It goes off. It was made for one.

Except on the sixth day, when He told them to gather double, and it kept, and there was no worm in it. Read that carefully, because it is the whole thing. When God gives you tomorrow's, it keeps. When you take tomorrow's on your own account, it does not. The bread was never the problem. The reaching was.

Give us today

Jesus knew this story the way you know your own kitchen, and when His friends asked Him how to pray, He gave them one line about provision and it was this: give us this day our daily bread. This day. Not the month, not the quarter, not enough to stop counting for good. He put the whole of a person's provision inside the size of one day, and He did it on purpose, because a day is the size a person can actually hold.

Then, a few breaths later in the same teaching, He said the sentence that is really the answer to your Thursday. Do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble. You were given a day, and a Father, and you were not given a week to carry on your back. That is not my thought. Matthew 6:34 is His word, and His Spirit is the one who moves it from a hillside in Galilee to the place where you are standing with your hands on the glass.

Hear what He is not saying. He is not saying tomorrow has no needs; He says tomorrow will have its own. He is not saying stop planning; He is saying stop living there. There is a difference between writing the week down and moving into it, and the count you do on a Thursday is a moving in.

You are met today, and today is the only day you have been handed, and it is met. Scripture calls the bread of a person's portion exactly that, the food that is needful for me, and the Spirit who inspired the line is the same Spirit who can make you feel the weight of a full drawer for the first time in a long time. That is His work, and I am not going to promise you the feeling. I am going to tell you what is true and put it in your hands.

And now the part where I have to be honest about your mouth. The count is a mountain, and it has a name, and it is Thursday. Jesus put the moving of a mountain in the mouth and not in the mind: say to it. He did not ask for a great deal of faith to do the saying. He set the measure so small you could lose it in the lint filter of that dryer. So the smallness is not your problem. You have the standing to speak to a Thursday, because Christ is in you and you are in Him, and the authority to name what is true over your own table was delegated to you and not earned by getting the sum right. The word puts provision inside a day on purpose, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries what you say further than your voice.

The breakthrough

Nothing about your Thursday changes tonight except where you are standing in it. The sum is what it is and I do not carry authority to promise you a different one, and I will not pretend to. What He does with the month is His, and He does it however He does it. What I can say without a hedge is that the count is not where you live. You live in a day, and the day is measured, and it is met.

You are inside today's portion right now, and it is yours, and tomorrow's is not yours to carry yet. Exodus 16 says a day's bread was made for a day, and the Spirit of God is the one who can make a person feel that in a launderette with the towels going round. So come in from the edge. The bread will not keep overnight anyway. Eat today's.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, standing where the count usually starts, with your hands full if you can manage it. Not because the words are a lever and God is a till. Because you are in Christ, and He is the one who taught you to pray for a day at a time, so the standing to speak over your own Thursday was handed to you by Him and not by the sum coming right. Scripture is the ground under each line and the Holy Spirit is the current in it; the words are not stronger for being ancient and not weaker for being said over a dryer. The mountain here is a habit with a day of the week for a name. Jesus said the one who says to the mountain, be lifted, and does not doubt, has what he says. So say it, to Thursday, in the name of Jesus, and let Him do with the month whatever He does. The month is His. Today is in your hands.

  1. Thursday count, you are a habit and not a shortage, and you do not get to read the fridge for me. Exodus 16 says the one who gathered little had no lack, and today's portion is in my hands, measured by the same hand that measured the manna.
  2. Fear that tomorrow is mine to carry tonight, get out of my kitchen, in the name of Jesus. Manna kept overnight bred worms and tomorrow held overnight breeds the same, and I am setting both down where the Spirit can reach them.
  3. Father, You give this day its bread, as it is written, and You are giving it now, measured and met. I hold what I have in both hands and I call it today's, and I thank You, because tomorrow has its own supply and its own Father, and it is You.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
