The Open HandNehemiah 8:10

The Loaf at Closing Time

This message is for the shopkeeper who counts the bread down to the last loaf every evening and has never once let one go out of the door unpaid for, and who does not know when the counting became the whole of him

He knows the number before he opens. He has known it for nineteen years.

Forty on a Monday. Fifty five on a Friday. Thirty on the day the market is at the other end of the street. He bakes to the number and he sells to the number and he has got so good at it that there is almost never anything left on the rack at seven, and the almost is what he works on, quietly, every week of his life.

There is a pride in that and he is entitled to it. He came here with nothing. His father sold from a cart. He has three children who have never gone without and a shop with his own name over the door, and it was built out of the number.

Tonight there is one left. One, on the end of the rack, from the second batch. And a boy comes in at four minutes past seven with his hood up and a hand full of coins and asks how much, and counts them onto the counter twice, and it is not enough, and it is not even close.

And the shopkeeper hears his own voice say: sorry, we are closed.

The boy says fine and takes his coins back and goes. And the man stands there with one loaf on the rack and a shop with his name over the door, and he does something he almost never does, which is nothing at all, for about a minute.

Because it was not about the money. It has not been about the money for eleven years. He could have given the boy the loaf and it would not have moved a single figure that matters. He said no because saying no is what his hands do now. Somewhere in the years when it was genuinely tight, when there was a winter he does not talk about, his hands learned that nothing leaves without being paid for, and they have gone on believing that long after it stopped being true.

You know that counter. Yours may be a diary. It may be a habit of never letting anybody buy you a coffee. It may be that you have not offered anything to anybody in three years without first working out whether you could afford it. There was a hard season once, and you came through it by holding on, and your hands have not been told that it is over.

Come and sit at the back with the shutters half down. There is tea and there is that one loaf, and I want to show you a line from a very old day.

The Loaf at Closing Time

There is no code, and there is a portion sent

Let me say the plain thing first, because the name over the door of this site promises a secret and I will not keep a working man reading in hope of one.

There is no code. There is no arrangement in Scripture that makes a shop do better. Nothing you do with a loaf unlocks anything, and the moment somebody tells you that it does, they have turned God into a machine with a slot in it, and He is not that. He is a host, and I have eaten at His table, and there is no slot anywhere in the room.

What is in here is something else. Picture a whole city standing in a square while the law is read out to them for the first time in living memory, and the people weeping because they had not known, and the men in charge saying to them, no, not today, today is holy. And then this.

Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for this day is holy unto our Lord: neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the LORD is your strength.Nehemiah 8:10

Look at the shape of it. Eat well, they are told. Enjoy it. This is not a day for fasting. And in the middle of a command to enjoy their own food comes a small clause that changes the whole meal: send portions to the ones for whom nothing is prepared.

Not a percentage. Not a collection. Not a list of who deserves it. Portions, out of the meal that was already on the table, sent to houses where nothing was cooking. And nobody is promised anything for doing it. There is no line about the sender's own table being fuller next year.

You were never asked to hold the whole of your own trade shut, and there is an edge of it that was never yours to sell. That is not a sentiment I have arranged for a tired man at closing. It is written into the day the law was read in the square, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a clause about portions and lays it beside one loaf on an empty rack.

You have a Provider whose own hands are open, and He has never once run short in nineteen years or in nine hundred. Scripture says He gives food to all flesh, and His Spirit is the one who takes a line like that and starts working on a grip rather than on a conscience.

Now let me name the true thing, because I would be no friend to you if I only admired your shop.

That winter you do not talk about did something to your hands, and your hands have been running the shop ever since. What looks like discipline from the street is, from the inside, a man who cannot let one thing go without a payment, and who heard himself say sorry, we are closed to a boy with his hood up, and did not recognize his own voice. It is not greed. I would not insult you by calling it greed. It is a wound wearing an apron.

You are not a mean man, and nothing about that winter was a verdict on you. Scripture never once shames the one who counted because he had to, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can open a hand without ever telling it that it was wrong to have closed.

And now what I owe you about your mouth, because a grip nineteen years old does not loosen because somebody was kind over tea. Jesus said that faith the size of a mustard seed, spoken to a mountain, does what quiet endurance never does. So speak, here, with the shutters half down. You have the standing to tell an old fear in your own shop what it is not, because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and Scripture calls that your standing rather than your achievement, and the Holy Spirit takes a spoken word out past the street.

The breakthrough

Something can open tonight, and it is not the till. I cannot move the takings and I would not stand in your shop pretending a warm hour has. What can open is the hand.

You are held by a God who told a whole city to send portions to the houses where nothing was cooking, and He has never once asked you to run your life with a closed fist. That is not a feeling I am working up over tea. It is written in Nehemiah 8, and it is the Spirit's own work to make a written line land in a body that has counted for nineteen years. What He does about the shop, the street and the winters ahead is His to decide, and I say so plainly rather than sending you home with a promise nobody gave me. What is not in question is whose the last loaf is. It was never the till's, and letting it go costs you nothing that was ever really yours.

So leave one back. Not the rack. One.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud with the shutters half down and the shop quiet. Not because the words are a lever and God is a mechanism. Because you are in Christ, and the authority to say what is true over your own hands has been given to you, and it does not rise or fall with the takings. What He does about the shop and the street and the years is His to decide, and a good Provider answers in ways I would never have written down for Him. The Holy Spirit is the one who carries these words further than your own doorway, so let Him.

  1. Bread counted to the last loaf, you are a careful honest trade and you are not the whole of me. It is written that portions are sent to those for whom nothing is prepared, and the God who wrote that keeps His own count.
  2. Fear from that winter, get out of my hands, in the name of Jesus. The Holy Spirit is not asking me to trade badly, He is opening fingers that learned to close in a hard year, and He has never called that year my fault.
  3. Lord, You feed all flesh and You have never once run short, and the measuring has always been Yours rather than mine. One loaf stays back at closing tonight, and it was never mine to sell.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
