The Bottom Drawer on Moving Day

The tape gun makes that tearing noise every time somebody closes a box, and by the middle of the morning the whole house sounds like it is being unstuck.

Her sister-in-law has the kitchen. Her brother and the man with the van have the sofa wedged in the hall at an angle that has stopped being funny. The children have been given the job of writing on the lids in felt tip and have taken it very seriously, so there is a box marked SPOONS AND THE DOG'S THINGS and another marked DO NOT DROP in three colors. She has the study, because it is hers, and because there is one drawer in it that she wants to reach before anybody else does.

The bottom one. Under the printer paper and the old chargers, in the box it was posted in, still in its plastic. A workbook, with a foil title, and a card slipped in the front with a login on it that she used twice. She paid for it two years ago at one in the morning after a video with a clock counting down in the corner, on the card she keeps for emergencies, in a month that had already been long, because the man in the video said God had a pattern for money that most believers had never been shown, and she had been a believer for thirty years and had never been shown it, and that felt like proof.

She has never told anybody. Not her husband, who does the accounts and never asked about the line on the statement because it looked like a work thing. Not her sister-in-law, who would have been kind about it, which would have been worse. She hears the tape gun go in the kitchen and her sister-in-law laughing at something one of the children wrote, and she takes the workbook out of the drawer and does not put it in the box for the tip, and does not put it in the box marked STUDY, and puts it in her handbag, under the scarf, and zips it.

That is what is being moved to the new house. Not the workbook. The zip.

And you have a drawer like that, or a folder on the laptop, or a login you have never canceled because canceling it would mean looking at it. Somewhere in your house there is a thing you paid for because it promised you a way in to God's provision that everybody else seemed to have been given, and it did not work, and you have never once said so out loud, and the not-saying has become heavier than the thing.

There was never a code

You are safe here, so let me say the plain thing first, and say it before anything else, because everything after it depends on it. There is no code. There is no pattern that most believers were never shown. There is no secret about God and money that a course can hand you, because Scripture does not have one to hand. What the Hebrew Scriptures actually carry about money is older and stranger and much less saleable than that: corners of a field left standing for somebody else, wages paid before the sun goes down, debts let go in the seventh year, a fiftieth year that hands a whole life back. None of it is a technique. All of it is God being God toward people. And the Holy Spirit who breathed those pages has never once put a price on the reading of them.

So hear the second plain thing, and hear it gently. You were not foolish. You were looking for God. That is what the video caught: not your greed, your hunger. You wanted to be near the One who provides, and somebody standing between you and Him sold you a map to a room He had already left open. The written word says He who did not spare His own Son will also with Him graciously give us all things (Romans 8:32), and the Holy Spirit who breathed that line has never been for sale. A person who reaches for what is freely given and gets handed a bill has not been stupid. She was hungry on a night the month was long, and somebody had something to sell. And I am not going to spend this page on whoever sold it to you. They are not on trial in this room, and your relief does not need them to be. Your relief needs a Father at a door.

The son who spent it all

Jesus told a story about a young man who took his share of everything and went to a far country and spent it, the text says, on reckless living. He came to the bottom of it in a pig field, hungry, and he made a speech to say to his father, and the speech was mostly shame: I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Then he started walking. And here is what happened when he got close.

But the father said to his servants, "Bring quickly the best robe, and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet. And bring the fattened calf and kill it, and let us eat and celebrate. For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found." And they began to celebrate.Luke 15:22-24

Read what the father does not do. He does not ask what it was spent on. He does not ask how much. He does not say I told you so, or you should have known, or how could you fall for that. The boy has a whole speech about being unworthy and the father talks over it with a robe. The father's only word about the boy's condition is lost, and his only word about it now is found. Not fooled. Found.

You have a Father like that, and I am not making Him up to make you feel better. He is written down in Luke 15, and Jesus told the story on purpose to people who were being looked down on for the company they kept, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a story two thousand years old land in a study on moving day. The far country you went to was a video with a clock in the corner. The robe is the same robe.

The coin, the lamp, and the broom

There are two more stories in that same chapter, and they matter here, because they are about things that were lost without doing anything wrong. A sheep wanders, the way sheep do, and the shepherd leaves the ninety-nine and goes after it and comes home with it across his shoulders, rejoicing. A woman loses one coin out of ten and lights a lamp and sweeps the house and looks until she finds it, and then calls the neighbors in. Nobody blames the coin.

Notice the order. Sheep, coin, son. The chapter moves from the thing that could not help wandering to the one who chose to go, and it says found over all three, in the same voice, with the same party at the end. The Word does not grade the finding by how the losing happened. The finding is what the shepherd does, what the woman does, what the father does, never what the lost thing does.

So the shame you have been carrying, the one that says you should have known better, is aimed at the wrong end of the story. Whether you wandered like a sheep or walked like the son, you are found because He looked, and Scripture says the looking is His whole character. The Spirit who was in the woman's lamp is in the room where your handbag is.

What you were actually looking for

Now let us go underneath, because a course does not get bought by somebody who has everything. You paid for it because you were tired of counting, because being near God's provision felt like a locked room, and because a confident voice said he had the key. What you wanted was not a technique. It was to be told that God is not withholding from you. That the room is open. That you are not behind on something everybody else got.

You are not behind. There is nothing being kept from you. Jesus said freely you received, freely give (Matthew 10:8), and the freely is not a discount, it is the price. What God gives about money He gives in the open, in Deuteronomy and Leviticus and the Sermon on the Mount, in the same book you already own, and His Spirit has been ready to teach you from it on any night of any month with no clock counting down. What was sold to you was a copy of a door that was already open. That does not make you a fool for buying it. It makes you somebody who wanted in.

So here is the sentence I would hand you on the floor of that study: I stop paying for what He gives. Not because paying is wicked, but because you cannot pay for what has already been handed over, and every month you keep the login is a month you are telling yourself the room is still locked. It was never locked. Somebody sold you the key to an open door, and you are allowed to put the key down.
